We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
I have been slow to get to this over-worked story, but It's an excellent article about the surgical approach to identity confusion. I suspect that the vast majority of American Psychiatrists would agree with the author's point of view.
Michael Jackson thought he was Elizabeth Taylor, but he was not.
All of which is true - excellent article by the way - but nonetheless our political lords and masters have decreed that some forms of insanity are constitutionally protected states of being. The city council of San Antonio, TX has just passed a city ordinance which says, in part, that ever having said anything against "transgendered" people or in disagreement with their right to fight against reality (h/t to the Python troop) is disqualified from holding any city officer, appointed or elective, and is likewise disqualified from any city contract. Once we allowed without any serious public disagreement the change to the DSM that homosexuality is not a form of insanity, the door was opened wide. It is now too late to effectively oppose this madness for the insane now rule the asylum ... which, by the way, America became when it was decided that institutionalization for the hopelessly insane was a violation of their human rights. Welcome to the snake pit, but don't make any long reservations for your seats, as it won't last very long.
I identify as a Crow even though all of my ancestors came from Europe. I feel it's my true nature. I know which way to face the teepee, I can walk silently in the forest, I can catch my own meat, and I can identify edible wild plants. Many say that race is just a social construct, so if that's the case, I want my share of the casino receipts.
No more ludicrous than claiming you can identify as a man when you are a woman.
This article is by Paul McHugh, University Distinguished Service Professor of Psychiatry at Johns Hopkins University.
He once headed, maybe founded the "gender reassignment" program at Johns Hopkins and later discontinued it. He has some very interesting things to say about this kind of disorder.
Frightening is this article from the New Yorker (of course): http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2013/03/18/130318fa_fact_talbot
The numbers of teens claiming to be really the opposite sex reminds me of the Salem witches.
