Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Can't keep everything from your parents' storage spaces

But I will keep the play barn that Grandpa built for me when I was 5. It was a rough copy of the barn at the Farm, where Mom had her horses. Someday, perhaps grandkids who will have had less contact with farm work and farm animals, will enjoy it. We have lots of little wooden animals. Maggie's Farm?


I repainted it once. The real one, with a pal. Large barn, with sliding barn doors back and front, wood-paneled tack room, etc White trim. Big job. Lousy pay. Good lead oil paint, of course.


Who remembers tar paper? It is still used sometimes, by those in the know. Good stuff. What is Tyvek?

I'm sure your grandkids (when they arrive) will enjoy it, too.
Old toys have a charm, but can also provide a great benefit.

I grew up in a tar paper shanty, still have family living there. We painted the barn, but put tar paper on the sheds. It doesn't look the finest, but it lasts for years.

Still a few "tar paper shacks" where I grew up. Couple got people living in them. We tar papered enclosed shed and used "oiled wood" for open machine shed and corn cribs.

Obviously the toy barn was important to your folks.

I like it. Very cool.

As for tar paper, I prefer 'tin' for roofing. Tar paper does not stand up well to hail.

Tyvek is good, but won't seal up against nails.

That's beautiful, and well worth holding on to. I have two old hand made play houses I can't part with, one going back three generations, with windows made of celluloid. They don't make them like they used to!

People in the know, know tyvek is vastly overrated and felt paper (tar paper) is more than good enough. The only reason more people don't use it is tyvek is more durable when put on the whole house before siding and is not as easily blown off. I am a long time carpenter and const. supt. Personally, I would use tar paper.
