We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
I have often thought while watching the news of some NGO feeding starving kids some white glop and about half never survive, that if they could air lift in McDonalds hamburgers and fries that probably all or most of the kids would survive. But then I remember that most NGO's that feed people in other countries are the loony left and think McDonalds is poison.
When the government of Zimbabwe killed or removed all the white farmers and gave the land to cronies they experienced massive famine. The U.S. as usual sent untold tons of food, in this case corn meal since that was the food of choice. But U.S. corn is GMO so the NGO's on the ground convinced the Zimbabwe government that it would be better to not give out the food and let thousands of their people die then take the chance that GMO corn might make them grow two thumbs on each hand or something like that I guess. So the NGO's allowed tens of thousands of Zimbabweians (sp) to die rather then allow that nasty GMO corn that 300,000,000 Americans have been eating for almost 30 years now with no ill effect. So there is little doubt in my mind that the NGO's would prefer the starving children die rather then allow McDonalds to be seen as "good" food.
My better half loves the food in question. And is scrawny. But only because he is a skinflint and only buys that one thing. I hate the food and honestly prefer lentils and veggies fr my garden. Or potatoes and cabbage ditto w cheese. In my travels I have never seen a poor person buying only the food in question. They get the bigger sizes and add empty extras to quadruple the calorie count and increase the cost by 8 times. The miracle food functions as a loss leader and gets you in there.
Also, this line fr the article was arrant BS: ". A 2,000-calorie day of meals would, if you stuck strictly to the good-for-you stuff, cost $36.32, said the study’s lead author, Adam Drewnowski." I can feed my family of five a healthy home cooked dinner for 5 dollars a night without forcing them to go vegetarian. The key is to shop the seasonal specials, buy in bulk, freeze things, use leftovers, bring lunch to work or school rather than buying, grow what you can, make everything from scratch. And not buy junk or snack foods.
My kids bake awesome "unhealthy" treats better than a bakery--we are not food Nazis.
Go to Trader Joe's rather than Whole Foods, too. Porridge instead of puffed air (commercial cereal)

Good point. Reminds me of the pols and brain-dead liberals who claim that it is impossible to eat well on the ~$5/day/person that food stamps allocate. And when you point out that with cooking, this goal is very easily reached, the reply is that you can't expect the poor to cook for themselves.
Am I correct in concluding that your $5/night is per person, and not for all of your family of five? Or is this done for $5 for everyone with a healthy dose of homegrown vegetables?
When I eat oats- my favorite grain- I am reminded of the definition of oats given in Johnson's dictionary: "a grain eaten by horses and Scotsmen." Must be the Scots/Scots Irish portion of my ancestry kicking in.
Like your husband, the only thing I eat from McDonalds is the $1 burger. Would that be a tight-fisted Scotsman in operation?
In addition to your postings, an additional thing I miss from your old blog was your blogroll.
