Funny this article should crop up today. Just last night the husband and I were talking about an acquaintance whose daughter was stalked on campus. Basically, the university did nothing, but her friends/resident assistant did. They helped her move secretly to a different dorm altogether. Creep still found her. It was quite scary and disturbing.

I told my husband that universities seem to ignore actual crimes on campus b/c they don't want to end up with statistics that show they are dangerous for young women. This is why on-campus rapes and other crimes of the same nature tend to get swept under the rug by campus police.

I would agree with your statement here...why call campus police or report any crime to the university and expect action? Call the regular police. You will get a better response, IMHO.

Just one more thought, I think the universities are taking advantage of the immaturity of these students. During any orientation, I am sure they give the students the impression that they should call campus police if anything criminal happens. They also likely provide numbers to call, red phones placed around campus for emergency situations, etc. All of this information is probably handed out to try to keep crime under wraps and handled by the administration.

These students are only reacting as they have been instructed by their school. The best thing to do is let you kids know is that only the ACTUAL police can handle arrests, crimes, etc. The campus police are really only good for enforcing parking rules.
