We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
"Only later did Haley begin to think of what had happened as rape — a disturbingly common part of many women’s college experience. In a 2007 survey funded by the Justice Department of 6,800 undergraduates at two big public universities, nearly 14 percent of women said they had been victims of at least one completed sexual assault at college; more than half of the victims said they were incapacitated from drugs or alcohol at the time.
In our 30-year study from birth (Lives Across Time), almost every woman had her first sexual experience when drunk -- every one of them regretted this. Many of the boys also were drunk on their first sexual experiences -- none expressed regret.
We could treat this more dispassionately-- like finding crime statistics and locations, or finding prevalence of infections and associated risk factors -- and responding by decreasing the risk. This would lead to less misery among young women (and less angst among parents).
As for Universities: that they turn a blind eye to their 18-20 year olds drunk fests and the adverse consequences should at least lead parents to insist on more protection for their tuition.
60 years ago when I was young the girls used alcohol as an excuse to do things they wanted to do but proper young girls did not do. I suppose today with the collapse of morals as related to sex and unwed mothers that girls no longer feel they need an excuse to do what proper young girls did not do. But somehow I suspect not so much has changed. I suspect many young women choose to drink alcohol and then feel freed from conscience to do 2 or 3 guys and even do acts they couldn't even think of doing sober. Doubt it?? You need to go to spring break. Although the boys are there to see and do make no mistake the girls are there to show and be done (and to do as well). What saddens me is somehow being drunk is allowed to absolve one of the actors in the act of sex but alcohol somehow doesn't absolve the one of the wrong (or politically incorrect) gender.
