We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
I know of someone who moved to Raleigh expecting to be immersed in Southern charm and was flabbergasted to find many of her neighbors were from Long Island and other points North. I have encountered many a lib type who hasn't had a new thought of moved on since the 60s. Pathetic.
Rural electrification transformed the South: companies, people, Snowbirds have been abandoning the old Rust belt for 50 years now, and yep, there has been a reverse migration of African Americans. Oh, um, it doesn't fit the narrative.
Yes, it's true. The South isn't anything like it was when Democrats held control of the the politics. Remember, Bull Conner was a member of the Democratic National Committee.
Although, Jim Crow was overturned, the Democrats weren't thrown out all at once and were very successful in instituting a system of low expectations for blacks through government welfare and "affirmative" action.
Sadly, as Exasperated intimated, the South is being infected by Northerners. Best I can tell New York is a great place to be from and visit but few would return to live there even at gun point.
Chief Justice Roberts, in his discussing the VRA case, said that the state with the highest gap between white election turnout and black election turnout is Massachusetts. Yes, more-enlightened-than-thou, Yellow Dog Democrat Massachusetts.
In my most recent visit back to my NE hometown, I had a discussion with a peer who had worked in DC and other places and then come back home to retire. He was complaining about the antiquated procedures at the local Department of Motor Vehicles. He said that North Carolina, where his daughter lived, had a much more streamlined procedure. So much for the backwards South and the progressive North.
