Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Asking Gen Y about real men is like asking a 6 yo about Pokemon. Yeah, they want to live there, and they can ramble on tirelessly with disconnected thoughts and nonsensical reasoning.
...and cultivate an exaggerated five o'clock shadow to prove they're not girls.
I like that a guy writing a whiny article about how there are no real men anymore tries to include himself in the real men category.
The urbanistas long for machine politics and conformity. They know people in the countryside were the ones who came up with that crazy Constitution and Rights that limit the imposition of their "elite" ideas. They support freedom of speech...to a point, but abhor freedom of thought.
and yet, they long for the compost heap, the kitchen garden, and all the other features of life on your own plot of land. But more than the urbanista policies driving out the poorer subjects into suburbia, they also, willfully drive out the employers, at least in those unseemly, sweaty businesses. Yes, they welcome the leaches, the white collar support servicers. Their kind of people, you know. Cities exist to amplify economic activity, to permit more of it to be done in a day. If workers must trudge each morning to some central location, then it is around that job that people will congregate. But wait, such locations are usually not what is desired in a dense urban living experience. I sense a problem. Live in a dense, miserable, tightly controlled urban environment and commute each day to your job outside of town? How long before some notice they can live on the other side of work in a nice pastoral setting? And, oh yeah, services and other support businesses follow the people, not the planners. The article on Detroit never mentions the real underlying cause of Detroit's demise...the change in demographics from majority white to majority black followed by the black takeover of the city politics and administration. The demise of Detroit is almost perfectly correlated to this demographic change.
Cities with similar demographics and political orientation are also facing a very difficult future: Milwaukee, Chicago, Kansas City, Atlanta, New Orleans, Richmond, Indianapolis, Memphis, Newark...I'm sure there are others. The tragedy of Chicago that is unfolding is their horrifying black underclass is metastasizing to other mid Western cities like Milwaukee, Des Moines, Minneapolis and Indianapolis. The demise of Detroit is almost perfectly correlated to this demographic change. Same with crime, STD, failing schools and a whole passel of other social ailments, but as a nation, we just can't face up to it.
The demographic change was driven by the policies of the city govt. that drove out the higher educated, the well paid, and the white people. The policies they thought would help blacks hurt everybody - especially blacks because they were less mobile.
From what I understand, the suburbs of Detroit are not in bad shape. You've identified the primary cause that caused the demo shift which wrecked Detroit.
It appears to me that historically Detroit was in excellent financial shape until it elected Coleman Young mayor in 1974, the first in an unbroken line of Democratic black mayors, too many of whom proved to be incompetent and corrupt. As phil g noted, this seems to be a pattern with black-run cities throughout the US. I'd add it's no different globally. When you look at different countries around the globe, which ones are serious basket cases? Detroit = New Orleans = Haiti is too strong a pattern to ignore. Effective self-rule takes discipline and hard work, not to mention a bit of luck.
PS: I'd go further and add, Detroit = New Orleans = Haiti = USA. In just another example of what has played out in small scale in Detroit, Obama is following in the footsteps of the Democratic black mayors of Detroit to squander our entire nation's prosperity. Unfortunately, with the help of too many craven Republicans, he's succeeding.

About our men becoming boys: What d'ya think about Putin and the Super Bowl Ring? Do you think that would have happened to anyone in this country 40 years ago?
We can get a journalist killed off, but we can't get that damn ring back? I say take back that GD ring! and do it mano o mano! PUHLEEZE tell me where we left our spine? Oh, I remember affirmative action wasn't it, or was it common core like curriculum . . .? Isn't my problem. The moron handed his ring to a kleptocrat and now whines because it was stolen. So there is not "we" in this.
Me thinks yall are calling Mr. Kraft a woosy girl, girl.
He gave the ring to Putin. Maybe, he really does like Vlad. Speaking of coincidences has this every bothered any of you ?:
In July 1997,TWA #800 goes down after take off (12 minutes) off out. Crashes off of coast of West Hampton. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TWA_Flight_800 Did you science types buy into the "official findings"? Foolish people, because at the time they were doing the investigation another crash occurred shortly after take off from JFK. In September 1998, Swissair #111 had a 13 minute black out 13 minutes after take off from JFK--my o my what a coincidence. But, the Captain accepted instructions to fly to Halifax for landing--never made it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swissair_Flight_111 In October 1999, Egyptair 990 went down just after take off from JFK. It crashed just outside of Nantucket Island same approximate time after take off. This one we blamed on the Muslim pilot being anxious about Allah. Please, oh please don't bother telling me I don't know my science. I know the politics of my country and that is enough! I have never believed the bs from the investigators and now it seems that those investigators from the TWA flight are coming forward to tell the truth! I do believe these flights were sabotaged. Would someone here please remind us all of the political issues that were the big items of the day ? Anyway, I believe that TWA and Egyptair were shot down from somewhere around Nantucket or Long Island. I also believe that Swissair was not "shot down" because of the international implications and the cargo it was carrying. However, it was sabotaged at JFK prior to departure. The one constant in all three of these airline 'events' is the amount of time after take off from JFK (second constant). They all knew they were in trouble 12-15 minutes after take off and after heading in approximately the same direction (third constant).
Good comment from WUWT on the Greenland article:
"Is there actually any such thing as science any more. Can’t anybody say the magic words “we don’t know what caused it”, perhaps in association with “models that should have predicted it failed. Again." QUOTE: Samuelson: Americans have record wealth, but aren’t spending it Bird Dog: Hoarding assets, in the Obama economy. Foolish not to keep $ in mattress. That's the typical situation after a financial calamity, which dates to the Bush Administration. People hoard cash. Rates can't go below the zero bound, so fed policy is like pushing the economy on a string. QUOTE: Paul Hudson: Why Men Aren’t Really Men Anymore ...There are of course certain men out there who still have their affairs in order, but we are few in number. What people are most often subject to is the company of boys who are refusing to grow up and man up — boys who prefer to play with their toys than to do their part in bettering society, the human race and the world as a whole. Gatsby!! QUOTE: Anthony Watts: Remember that ‘unprecedented’ Greenland ice sheet surface melt that was allegedly caused by global warming? Never mind. We followed the links, including the one to the NASA press release, which suggests a natural cycle. http://www.nasa.gov/topics/earth/features/greenland-melt.html Makes you wonder why the NASA press release didn't lead off with, "NASA observations confirm current Greenland ice pack melting is part of natural cycle".
Because that wasn't known at the time.
An anomalous observation is reported. Scientists propose various hypotheses, then test those hypotheses. Standard operating procedure in science. must be have a different NASA press release than the one you linked to which say:
QUOTE: "Ice cores from Summit show that melting events of this type occur about once every 150 years on average. With the last one happening in 1889, this event is right on time," says Lora Koenig, a Goddard glaciologist and a member of the research team analyzing the satellite data. "But if we continue to observe melting events like this in upcoming years, it will be worrisome." That was one hypothesis. The recent study by Hanna et al. pins the warming on a high-pressure system which caused warm southerly air to move over western Greenland.

QUOTE: Jim Hoft: Oh Brother… Obama Tells Irish Audience “Hope” Can Resolve Wars While hope alone is not sufficient for peace, it is a prerequisite. Indeed, peace in Ireland, after generations of conflict, give hope to others that their own differences can be overcome. The Navy inspection reminds me of the scene from Patton where he reminds a soldier "... this is a barracks not a bordello".
Haiti, is that where there's a host of NGO's and UN peacekeepers strengthening rule of law, promoting and protecting human rights? Detroit, will be interesting to see how this plays in the upcoming 2014 election. BTW, who cleaned up the most there, the elected officials (and hangers on) vs the bond underwriters, attorneys, etc? Volcanic ash? I believe there's piles of it around Portland and surroundings, ffrom 33 years ago.
Images & what not--I've read there was a sweep of the missile launch control centers for such a few months back. There are female launch crew members; have been for about 30 years.
