We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Indeed the USSR and the Russian held countries in Eastern Europe fell because of inherent flaws of communism/socialism. But would it all have collapsed without Reagan? Reagan's role in all of this seemed strangely absent in this article. Can't give Reagan any praise or acknowledge he was right on so many things.
GWtW, i like to think there's few if any greater fans of RR than i, but the fall of the wall may have been history's greatest conspiracy --with RR on the outside of it.
There's this guy named JR Nyquist whose life-calling is studying the constellation around this topic. His archive (a master of compression, these are five-minute reads --but invariably supported by links to deeper sources):
I am not one who likes to blame or credit any president with everything that happens during their term. For example I don't believe Clinton did anything that balanced the budget but he is generally credited with that accomplishment. I don't think Carter caused the worst recession in the 20th century but it happened during his term and I think he had no idea how to fix it. But I do think that Reagan actively took actions that forced the USSR to spend themselves into bankruptcy and that directly or indirectly lead to the wall coming down. I accept that there were other factors and other world leaders who by their actions or inactions contributed to the wall coming down.
I agree with everything you said. What i was getting at may be nothing more than the Warsaw Pact HQ treading the handwriting on the wall --very much of it RR's.
I wouldn't've even made mention of those 'rope-a-dope' schemes (the Nyquist archive recounts 'em) the old commies used to wind up inside NATO and our financial system --not to mention our green movement (Gorby fired up Green Cross ASAP he puynched his last USSR time card) --except for the fact that the world communist movement should've gone out with its creator and sponsor, USSR, but instead it hardly missed a step, on any of the mimetic warfare fronts, despite that the Soviet economy went to pieces without its gulag keepers.
Now, of the three big blocs, the two red ones have no debt and ascendant middle classes, while the western bloc is as you know choking on debt and in retreat. Our problems have been spectacularly exacerbated by operatives and agents inside our own countries busily destroying the foundations of the free market that is the centerpiece of liberty --Obama for a fine example --and all of them for the past 20 years have had enormous freedom to wreak slow havoc due to the fact that ''we beat communism'' so ''there's nothing to worry about''.
If they HAD taken a dive, things would look about they DO look. If RR had come to power 20 or even 10 years younger, and had not gotten ill, i have no doubt that what may have turned out to have been a dive, could've been made --by his attitude and skills even post-presidency --to be permanent.
