We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
It seems that we often miss the other Wars thinking that they were all treated much like the WWII veterans were/are. In truth, the nation's veterans have been handed the short end of the stick. People forget about the WWI "Bonus Army" which sent 15,000 former servicemen to Washington and a riot occurred. The riot was suppressed by order of President Hoover under the command of Chief of Staff General Douglas MacArthur. Six tanks were dispatched with Major Dwight D. Eisenhower as liaison with Washington police and Major George Patton led the cavalry. Patton lead a bayonet cavalry charge and by morning the entire camp was razed, on fire and veterans scattered.
The Korean War is often called "The Forgotten War", we all know what happened to Vietnam vets and now we've got another whole class of veterans with a whole new set of issues and problems which the VA frankly, is unequipped to handle.
In some ways, it's depressing, but I stopped looking back years ago and started looking forward - what's done is done and life moves on.
