We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
On the upside, if women have to prostitute themselves due to global warming, they'll finally be able to use the practical skills the modern, especially Ivy League, college "experience" in the humanities gives them.
To most conservatives - heck, to most Americans - immigration has rather obviously been about culture rather than race. The debate has shifted because it is hard to define our culture in ways we all agree on (I prefer a mental picture of poles of attraction rather than either-or, myself), but it is easy to say "You just don't like darker skin. All this talk is just a smokescreen for your bigotry." It is a PR battle that is going to be hard to win.
Which is why we're not winning it. However much conservative commenters boil over that it is simple if the politicians would just come out and articulate our values, that is clearly not true. That we have regional and historical differences in what we mean and thus only an 80% overlap, person-by-person, is a vulnerability that is not going away. Any popular conservative will be continually steered into comments that irritate 20% of his potential base - another conservative steered into a different 20%. The 80% cultural agreement is real, not a myth as most liberals would maintain. But the 20% is real as well.
This is why I recommend pursuing Asian rather than hispanic voters, BTW. They are closer to that 80% overlap in values. (Exceptions abound, especially among hispanics not from Mexico.)
Assistant VIllage Idiot
I believe in a very simple approach. We should have no immigration, legal or illegal (through amnesty), until our Unemployment rate is below 4%. I think conservatives and liberals could agree on that. I guess it's too simple for politicians to make money off of, so nobody says it.
The point of immigration is not to make the immigrants happy. The point is: will it improve life for the people already here (Americans)?
CNN? Why should I watch a "news" show from one who's EARNED my distrust?
"The state’s Department of Environmental Protection now says there is no evidence to connect natural gas drilling with high levels of methane in private water wells in the small town, which sits within the Marcellus Shale region, one of the largest known natural gas deposits in the world and exhibit A of how fracking is transforming the American energy landscape.
The agency specifically says the gas is coming from elsewhere."
That is just so contrary to what I think is true that I shall refuse to believe it, and they must have been bought off by those E-Vile unnatural gas monopolists!
