We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Unluckiest generation? Really? Perhaps the previous century's millennials. You know the one that died in the trenches over petty grievances of European elites. And then, got a pandemic flu. Or the Greatest generation who got all the joys of Progressive economics then, oh yeah, to die all over the world for more petty grievances of, this time the worldwide elite.
Life's tough. I came of age in the wake of the 1970s where the "planned" economies started collapsing. Fortunately, Reagan got elected, Disco died and we had a short period of prosperity.
Perhaps these millennials will wise up, throw out the Democrats and Progressives and find their own way by throwing off the lies their teachers and parents steeped them in.
Well written. I had the same thought. Unluckiest only from a modern narcissistic viewpoint. The generation that came of age in 1855-1865 would have had a bone to pick with the characterization of millennials as "unlucky"
WWI/Spanish Flu generation was mostly the 'Lost' generation (the previous Nomad generation...like our GenX). The last Hero generation (the proper Generational Theory archetype for the Millennials') was the 'GI' generation, born 1901-1924. They experienced the Depression and WWII/Korea. Millennials haven't earned their status...yet, but the challenge is coming. Probably within the next 5 years.
Wiki's article on (Strauss-Howe) Generational Theory is a reasonable summary if you want to learn more.

Not all the millennials voted for Obama, but we all pay. I'm worried about a lot of lasting impacts, other than the economy, like the social changes. Can we realistically undo women in combat, 15 year olds getting abortion pills, and gay "partners" getting rights heterosexual couples don't have?
A large mass of rootless (marriage, children and a mortgage root one quick), over educated, under employed would be useful tools/fools for another Huey Long. However, there does not seem to be any one with that much brass.
Interesting to see how they react when they realize for all the pretty words, not much is being done to reduce those student loans.
I'm getting pretty tired of that "best educated" tripe. as a college teacher, let me assure you that perhaps a higher percentage of them have attended or graduated college, but that sure as heck doesn't make them "better educated" than previous generations. Too large a percentage of new graduates can't write well, read well, or think well.
They tend to come in as freshman damaged by lousy K-12 'education' and leave not much better.
Well said. "Best credentialed" might be a better descriptor.
And there in lies the modern truth of education, they have credentials up the whazoo but for many those credentials rest on a foundation of fallacies. And most assuredly don't signify the ability to do something useful for others that others might be willing to exchange money for the service.
This, of course, doesn't apply to all. The internet and education discussion is on the whole an upper middle-class bitch bar. The working and lower middle class kids have been perhaps damaged by their fine Progressive educations but they've also had to attend the school of hard knocks. Many of them are busy figuring out a way to be useful and not resting on their laurels waiting for that bitch reality to "recognize" their genius and hand them rewards for doing what they were told.
My 22 year old niece, the terrifying muse behind Dinocrat's Life of Julia (www.dinocrat.com) looked my dear Republican friend in the eye and said "Your generation will be dead in twenty years and we'll be running the country".
She has interned and worked for two years prior to graduation in inner city schools, and whatever her thoughts about "white male privilege" and "heteronormative" thinking, and complete lack of social grace and finesse...has landed a job prior to graduation. She will be teaching science at a Detroit school come June, reporting for training one day after graduation.
If she survives that trial by fire she is pretty certain she can write her own ticket, with her Master's degree and teaching credentials. Perhaps head to Harvard to study public policy.
This is a tough warrior kid. She'll help those weaker than her and needs no one's sympathy. She'll be a leader and I'm quite proud of her. She doesn't need luck, she's got grit and character...
The secret sauce behind her success -- a warrior mother that expects her daughter to be financially independent on graduating college...and has communicated that message for years prior.
