Back in the mid '90s when I lived in NYC a good friend was pursuing a Ph.D in English at Columbia. He was passionate about his subject, which when you learned what it was, sounded dead dull. But he could make it interesting and people would actually listen to him about it, until you made him shut up already.

Anyway, he counted himself fortunate because his subject was so abstruse and completely un-hip it didn't have a pre-established correct political posture attached to it. So he didn't have to worry about navigating all that.

I wonder if anybody can get away with that anymore at Columbia.

Minor correction - the left hate him because he's speaking the truth - liberals and progressives don't like the truth - it interferes with their utopian fantasies.

Their world is collapsing around them - everything they truly believe in has disappeared because that belief was betrayed by their own evidence - they were testifying against themselves.

Therein lies the issue - these bottle-fed useful idiots believe all the tripe that's been hoisted upon them - that they are special, everybody wins, we're all in this together, and the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.

But, that book of goods fails to impart one vital piece - reality. Not everyone wins a trophy, gets hired as a CEO\board member for the first job, nor has the road paved in gold. And, they are shocked to see that there is such a thing as 'competition', 'excellence', and 'responsibility' along life's road.

We have hired several IT college grads, and see them depart, after they see reality of starting at the bottom, but their 'vision' was beginning at the top. "This is not why I was hired" is the mantra, but they forget that even flowering plants begin as seeds...

The only difficulty most have, it seems these days, is running out of Doritos, loosing the internet connection, and the stark reality that life isn't all that their teachers\facilitators have been presenting...

Life is a full-contact sport, and they were never issued a helmet and pads...

I like that image. I'd say, in addition, no one told them they'd sometimes have to play hurt, or tired, or when they don't want to, for a losing team they don't like, with teammates and coaches they don't like and who don't like them, and this will go on until they pay their dues and can write their own contract with life.

and even then, the other side will be coached by people like me and their opponents will be from Notre Dame with good Irish names like Gronkowski or Bronko.

Parents who let their adult children move back in with them do their offspring no favor. I left home at 17 to go to college and never looked back. Married at 23, too, in case Amanda Marcotte is blog diving at MF. But that was a different age, when dinosaurs roamed the land.
