Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

New Orleans, Atlanta---the mismanagement and corruption in Detroit seems to be a pattern with all the "chocolate cities" in the country. It's Haiti redux. There's a good reason for "white flight." Detroit is the perfect example of how a once prosperous city can be impoverished once the street politics becomes centered entirely on race instead of competence.

the article understates the number of plague death in England, which was closer to 50% than 30%.

England during the plague years is a counter-example to the Mad Max fantasy of society breaking down common to Hollywood and the militia wannabes. there was, for the most part, a steady stream of people ready to step in and take over civil servant jobs (gravediggers, clerks, clerical, etc.) when vacancies occurred due to plague deaths. anyone looking for real world examples of how a reasonably prepared society deals with catastrophe (England had a couple of years to prepare for the plague) should look closely at England.

it seems to me that oversight of prosecutorial discretion in charging crimes is contrary to the balance of powers. if there's a fear of overcharging (the government always overcharges but the outcome is generally fair regardless), then fiddle with the preliminary hearing and make the government show a reasonable cause to prosecute all offenses.
