We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Although curbing obesity is the official rationale for restricting beverage servings, the city planned to make exceptions for drinks that have more calories per ounce than soda, such as fruit juices, milk shakes and beer. The exemption for milk-based beverages meant that Starbucks customers could order, say, a Venti White Hot Chocolate with whole milk and whipped cream (640 calories) but not a venti black coffee with four teaspoons of sugar (60 calories). A 20-ounce Coca-Cola, which the city would ban outright from food service establishments, has 243 calories.
Really, I would have went with because a fetus can't make choices. Unlike a rapist, who chooses to rape and whose choice is just as valid as the man (or woman) who chooses not to rape. It being a postmodern world and all where all choices and cultures are equal. Just as a woman can choose to find the rape traumatizing or she can choose to lie back and think of Obama. Plus, a Progressive politician can be a rapist and therefore if women are armed, he might be injured. He has already survived the fetus status and is therefore safe from such injuries.
The article about hearing competing sounds at a cocktail party was interesting. Your brain is good at filtering. With practice, you can pick out the alto part in a chorale piece and almost ignore the other parts.
I am about to go politically incorrect! I think so many lesbians are obese because they were sexually abused as children. I have watched enough programs about obesity to discover that most of the time, when the obese woman begins talking about her past, inevitably she discusses sexual abuse in childhood.
This also leads to my belief that the majority of lesbians were also sexually abused at some point. I don't think all of them were, but I do believe a large majority of them were.
Women need relationships for emotional reasons more than physical. And it is so much easier to find a woman you can turn to for emotional comfort than a man. Especially if you have been abused by a male in your past...
I truly believe that there are 3 kinds of lesbians. The ones who got an extra does of male hormones in the womb, and are born that way (in the vernacular, they're called dykes). The ones who want emotional comfort in a relationship and turn to women (they were often abused as children). And there's a third kind who are really bisexual, often having secret affairs w/ men, who have established themselves as lesbians, and don't want to change their public identity. There are more of those than you might think.
I would agree with your 'male hormones' in the womb comment b/c I went to boot camp with a 'woman' like this. She has hairs on her chest (not a lot, but enough to make her stand out as 'masculine') and was probably the manliest woman I'd ever met.
