We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
"I don't know if South Carolina has ever had a situation where we have a governor who is just against public education," Tenenbaum told The State newspaper. "I just don't understand his philosophy on it. The governor may not take much interest in the public schools, but most South Carolinians do."
And there's the basic disconnect on the left. "Public education" != "public schools". If a school is open to the public and is paid for by public money, it's public education. You can be in favor of spending tax money to ensure that all members of the public have access to an education without being in favor of the government actually operating the schools. The more foolish among them don't understand this. The cleverer among them DO understand this - but also understand that the public school system can be used to create a pool of voters and workers among the schools' staffs and can be used to pursue a specific social agenda among the students. So they do everything they can to obscure the difference.
Public education should be funded at the lowest level; the city or town and managed at the individual school level, i.e. give the principal hire and fire control of the teachers and then hold the principal responsible for results. letting the state and federal government into education is what destroyed it.
