We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Detroit has some of the highest big city property taxes in the nation, and property assessments remain overly inflated, amounting to as much as ten times the market price of the property, according to recent research compiled by two Michigan professors.
This has led to another phenomenon. Property owners are allowing themselves to be foreclosed upon, and then re-buying the same property at a reduced price, legally eliminating their outstanding debt in the process. Six hundred properties were repurchased in this manner in 2012, triple the number that occurred in 2010. In short, Detroit is a city on the brink of ruination.
Burn it. Nothing says that once a city has lost its economic rationale it has to continue. Regardless of its past, once the city is economically unsustainable it should be returned to nature. Entropy and all.
An acquaintance worked for a previous mayor of Detroit. Archer I believe...He described how the firemen rigged their schedule to ensure maximum overtime, every month. It was robbery in plain sight...As well, when the police union were up for contract renewal, their was no effective means of saying no to pay and benefit raises...The public service unions had/have a stranglehold on Detroit. Not the whole story by any means but just one piece of the puzzle that is Detroit's downfall.
To blame the unions and public service employees is to only tell half the story. The mayors and other elected officials of Detroit got some of that money too. There hasn't been an honest elected official in Detroit since 1967 and damned few before that. This is crony Chicago style politics with kickbacks, extortion, fraud, waste and abuse and now it is in the White house and the Senate. As shity a job as the House Republicans are doing can you imagine if the Democrats take the House in 2014? We are so screwed...
Tenochtitlan, Chitzen Itza, Chaco Canyon, Ur, Babylon, Angkor Wat ...
Cities that seemed to have it all, that were suddenly abandoned, and swallowed by the sands, forest, and jungle. The mute stones remaining keep their secrets.
And soon, Detroit, Philly, and Chicago. What, you don't think it can't happen here? It has always happened everywhere. Now, in our own lifetime, you will see it happen. And you'll know what happened at Angkor and Chaco.
The moment they stop paying the cops, the city will be emptied out in weeks. First the cops will go, then the garbage will stop being collected. Suddenly all the politicians will disappear. A week later either the water or electric will stop. And the final exodus will begin. Everyone will just get in their cars and drive away. And it will be a long time before anyone will come back, because of the bad juju. The stones may be mute, but the silence will terrify.
Nothing at all. The people just got up and left, and nobody could be bothered to tell why in a historically-robust record. The archeologists sift the garbage dumps and argue endlessly, hypothesizing and extrapolating from the fashions of their own age.
History doesn't repeat but it rhymes, they say. There is nothing new under the sun says the Teacher, but there has been every reason for a city's fall. Sometimes the cities are reoccupied, other times they never come back. We'll have to wait and see.
