Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

The Ph.D Bust:
Quelle surprise! If the government represses the economy even those who believe they deserve jobs (because of their education)—unlike bricklayers and welders and diswashers—can’t find jobs. No doubt Capitalism is at fault. Only the Marxist community organizers can save us, especially the most deserving of us: the Ph.d. I read the article, albeit rather quickly, and nowhere did it seem to occur to them that the bulk of STEM graduates has always gone to industry, but industry has moved to China et al. Hence, U.S. job shortage.
Will Only Suckers Buy ObamaCare Insurance?
The whole pay less in penalty than purchasing insurance is exactly what happened in Massachusetts under Romneycare - identical in fact. And still does! You would think that somebody would have pointed that out to the moron Congresscritters. Obama's Presidency is a disaster - a complete and total failure of pollitics, pollicy and common sense. Its going to take a long time to recover from this idiot in charge. They are Democrats and would not listen to us because they know so much better than we what is best for us.
My line is yours. Use it in good health. And be snide with it.
Actually, already have. Hope it was sufficiently snide. My caller, besides enjoying the alliteration, thought it was appropriate for a letter he is sending to some 535 politicians: "Dear Congresscritter,".
We produce way too many engineers and scientists at all levels. Almost half of BS engineers never do engineering. Instead they do technical sales or something else. Except at the most elite graduate schools, about three-quarters of PhD candidates are Asians. At the elite schools, half are foreigners. Most of them eventually go home, but nearly all try to stay in the US.
My former employer Ohio State, is strongly promoting STEM, especially for women and minorities. OSU's administration and much of its faculty is utterly delusional about this. Should they succeed, they will only increase the misery among our alumni. The web nowadays has all sorts of stories about how in an era of falling job opportunities (falling, not stagnant) for lawyers many universities are opening law schools. All of these programs serve the selfish personal interests of university presidents, deans and department chairs and seriously injure students. We don't have to many engineer and science students. There is no law that you must be employed as a lab jock in the field you studied. Having an undergraduate in engineering or science gives you the problem solving skills, analytical thinking, etc. for success in many fields.
And as opposed to having glut of lawyers, to many science and engineering types means many more will find interesting new problems to solve so that they can make their living. To many lawyers on the other hand, just means more efforts toward "innovative" interpretations of the laws to find new torts to use against the productive. Yes, I'm familiar with ZSU's push for STEM students, w/ the assistance of a local Memorial Institute (for whom I worked previously).
The end result will be that academics keep their ponzi scheme going for a little while longer, and we'll see fewer families and fewer babies http://www.thedailybeast.com/newsweek/2013/02/18/why-the-choice-to-be-childless-is-bad-for-america.html The Ph.D Bust: America's Awful Market for Young Scientists—in 7 Charts
Know what the difference is between a Doctorate in Engineering or a Bachelors in Engineering? NOTHING. Other than research (and maybe one or two obscure expertise areas), even a Masters is overkill. A competent engineer with five years of practical experience knows as much as any Masters or Ph.D ever did. When I was attending LSU, only one of my engineering course Professors was a Pd.D - Materials Science. Everybody else was Masters and two of them held Bachelors. And they were damn good engineers. And yes - I have a Doctorate - but its in mathematics, not engineering. And other than unconditionally qualifying me to teach math at the university level, it ain't worth a cup of coffee and a Dunkin' Donut. Talented engineers and technicians are what is needed - that's what the problem is. Reuters Poll: Majority in US Say Illegal Immigrants Should be Deported
More proof as if we needed more, that American politicians have become our ruling elite instead of the public servants they're supposed to be. On a daily basis now both sides of the aisle rule against the will of the people. "Its going to take a long time to recover from this idiot in charge." Who says we're going to recover? Already the MSM has Hillary! queued up and ready to roll and the very same Lo-Info voters that put "the first black in the white house" will be clamoring to do the same with "the first woman in the white house" 4 years from now. With the MSM totally in the tank for one political party it's a very near certainty that this will happen. BTW: Obama's Supreme Court picks this time around will further cement this nations fate. Remember that old joke, the Lone Ranger and Tonto are surrounded by attacking indians, and Lone Ranger says to Tonto, "We're in a lot of trouble!"
--and Tonto answers, "What do you mean 'we', Paleface?" I think whoever hit the WTC is after the Big Apple as a sort of Singapore, or Hong Kong, semi-autonomous trading city. The strategic moves are so clear we can't see 'em. All those boom decades post WWII, when through NYC the whole continent was drawing human and financial capital from the second world, the second world's lords were plotting ''how do we stop this?" Ask Putin --he's referred many times to a ''continental'' conflict. Don't call it MSNBC.
Call it Comcast! Unlike GE, Comcast depends on consumers for their revenue. Comcast management obviously thinks there's no risk that conservative consumers might one day connect the dots and realize they finance that execrable channel with their cable fees. How can the NHS be that bad? Paullie "The Beard" Krugman keeps telling us those terrible stories are untrue because the Brit Gummint runs the hospital system and he's a top economist!
Benghazi Barry wants to destroy the health insurance biz. Immigration: Can't trust BB or Congress on this. while I'm always happy to see mass arrests and deportations, trying to accomplish that would be a disaster for the GOP and conservative movement.
Hard authoritarianism: President Obama used Executive Order 921 times, more than the aggregate of all presidents in American history.
Does someone else see something out of balance here? well, at least we won't have to watch any more elections get stolen.
maybe you can tell me when the last time someone didn't claim an election was "stolen".
