Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Friday, February 8. 2013Friday morning linksIt's nor'easter season again. They are predicting a hearty snow dump today and tomorrow, with high winds, so don't be surprised if Maggie's is down for a bit (due to winds, not the lovely snow). Storms are caused by fossil fuels, claim many experts. Since there have been storms forever, I think that's a crazy theory. Here's a more compelling explanation for wintry weather: Asian astrologers warn of stormy Year of Snake If Americans would only stop driving cars and begin riding bikes instead, we'd have less snow and less cold in the winter. I think I got that science right, didn't I? But wait a minute - we love snow. It is peaceful, quiet, and beautiful.

Re: Toronto’s Sex Week
“Even Rome of Suetonius never known such orgies as the pervert balls of Berlin,” observed [Stefan] Zweig, “where hundreds of men costumed as women and hundreds of women dressed as men danced under the benevolent eyes of the police.” In The Closing of the American Mind, Bloom compared America to the Weimar Republic. We all know what followed. Then there’s After the First World War Shandor decided that society was too sick to survive And he wasn't alone. he had close to a thousand followers when he died Ya'll hang in there - good luck, stay safe.
The GOP should destroy Obama. Now is the time. Unfortunately, the GOP is being run by an entrenched group of compromisers. What these leaders don't understand is that Obama is playing hardball while they are playing dodgeball. I don't know how to change that. RE: Nor'Easter warning. Provision well with the triad (TP, Bread, milk, or, unless you're a college student - Beer, Pizza, Nacho chips), and make sure the candles and blankets are handy. Even tho they are shunned these days, some 'personal protection' (plus its ammo) to have handy may not be a bad idea.
Yup, we're all going to freeze to death, burn up in wildfires or just excessive heat, starve and die due to drought, flood, tsunami (especially in the midwest, OMG!), or falling windmill farms.
Don't know how I shall cope. I blame the education of kids today. When I was in school we read any number of stories that had the man against nature theme. The best were when man won.
These days everyone seems to think nature is this unknown entity that lurks just beyond the car window that will punish us if we sin. Somebody help me out, I seem to remember a story about back when I was a kid. Something about unions, pension funds, corruption. I think it had something to do with Las Vegas?
The Democrats are playing hardball but it is more then that; they are organized, they have numerous organizations that support them and work to put them in power and push out the opposition. No one even denies anymore that there was massive voter fraud in the election. The unions and ACORN did far more then "get out the vote". The Republicans are not organized. They are made up of career politicians and citizn legislators who felt compelled to run for office as a constitutional responsibility. They two groups don't see eye to eye and may never be able to function as one unit. Tell me how a conservative Republican could ever sit down with a John McCain and come to agreement on amnesty???
So the Republicans WON'T "win" the next election or the one after that or the one after that one, etc. What will happen is eventually a majority of voters, including Democrats will become so disenchanted with the Democrats that they will vote for Republicans out of desperation. Republicans may get elected and take over congress in 2014 but they won't "win" it. Dr. Benjamin Carson of Johns Hopkins gave a memorable address at the National Prayer Breakfast. It's worth watching and all over the Internet.
It's so cold, high school boys are pulling their pants up.
Ditto the wish that you'll keep safe & warm.
But regarding illegal immigrants and "They were not invited." Really, now. Did the Wampanoags invite the Pilgrims? I'm guessing they didn't. Did the Aztecs invite Cortez? Not a chance. Aside from 'guest workers' in Europe, I"m having trouble thinking of immigrants who've ever been invited. It is ironic when someone cites the example of the Indians and the immigrants that followed Columbus as proof that somehow all immigration is A)acceptable or B)illegal/inappropriate. Can you understand that the Indians would indeed have ejected all immigrants if they had the ability. It was the lack of ability to stop the immigration that caused their demise. So as an arguement in favor if continued illegal immigration this one falls terribly short.
It is important to note that all of the Indians or "native" Americans (if you prefer) were themselves immigrants but more then that they were the third major wave of immigrants from Asia and each wave of "native" Americans displaced/enslaved the previous "native" Americans. It is romantic to think of these noble savages as "native" Americans but in fact they were merely immigrants just like everyone in the world is merely immigrants to the lands they live in today. |
