Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

The South has risen again
Damn straight. "God, guns, families, patriotism--and low taxes" as the article says. While I miss rural New England, I love my new home state of South Carolina. The state has it's issues, no doubt about it, but they are minimal. Al Gore’s disastrous book tour: a breath of fresh air I read an article a few years ago which ranked the Ten Most Evil People on Earth - Algore came in second - right behind Immadinnerjacket of Iran. This wasn't a conservative hit list on the left either - equal opportunity list as several prominent conservatives were there also. Algore has always been a sanctimonious prig and thinks he's a lot smarter than he actually is. I imagine that Tipper finally had enough to his holier-than-thou crap and gave him the heave ho. Fortunately, she had her own wealth so it all worked out. Tom, did BD approve your idea to publish a "factoid of the --"? I think it's a great idea.
Nothing is worse than being lectured by idiots who don't walk the walk. When Gore gives up his 10,000-square-foot house, private plane, boats, etc., he may, may, may have more credibility (probably not). Same goes for Tom Friedman, Bill Gates, the Clinton family and Obama's czars, 90% of Hollywood, 100% of Congress, union bigshots and politicos across the country. Does anybody really believe they give a hoot?
Rich people, politicians and movie stars are exempt from the left wing mantra of saving the planet. Just be being left wing it is a given that they are the only ones trying to save gaia. Besides Al Gore used so tax exempt money to have someone eles plant some trees so he is allowed to fly around in jets and use millions of kilowatts to light and heat his home; he is carbon neutral don'tcha know. Silly you! The rules don't apply to those on the left.
All this reminds me of a couple of things.
First, while he was weeping at the Demcrap Convention for his sister who was dying (or had she died already) of cancer and prattling on about the evils of cigarettes, he still had tobacco allotments and was making money on that evil weed. Second, when California was in its recent energy crisis when Gray Davis was governor, Babs Streisand posted all sorts of good ideas to save electricity on her website. Some were pretty draconian as I remember, but the thing I really remember was that somebody asked her if she was going to do any of them. Why, no! Why would she do those inconvenient things? We are all hypocrites at one time or another, but the lefties often seem to spend a lot more time in that zipcode than anybody else. Ever read about Jerry "Governor Moonbeam" Brown's wealth and where it comes from?
Oil money from Indonesia. He has a piece of the family business started by his father Pat which imports oil from Indonesia for power generation in CA. The oil, of course, is "special" in that it is low sulfur and the specification for this one particular type of oil was written to exclude any other type of oil including the same type of oil from Alaska. How's that for leftie hypocrisy? No surprise there. It's par for the course. When Warren Buffett was asked by a reporter whether he'd be willing to pay the higher income taxes he was advocating for everyone else, he demurred, saying he could spend his great fortune "more wisely" than the government could. Which of course is why he has wealth planners who ensure that he'll be able to escape higher income taxes as well as estate taxes upon his death. It never seems to dawn on such people that they ought to be subject to the same rules and laws as everyone else.....which is the real reason the 2nd Amendment is so important to the rest of us.
The Mississippi Meander: Reminds me of a conversation I had with a biologist back in the early 60's who said killing off the wolves in the Northwest (to accommodate the ranchers from Hollywood) would have implications down the entire Mississippi to New Orleans.
"It's the food chain", he said, implying that wolves kill off deer, deer nosh on sprouting plants along the river, sprouting plants give rise to trees that clog the shore, etc. etc. etc. The result is constant repositioning of a raging river. Same thing goes for The Keys in Florida regarding mangroves. And the constant dredging and restoration to keep the shores on both coasts. Are we living in DisneyWorld? Why are we taxpayers supporting bad decisions by the few? Golden rice: Increasing the overpopulation in countries that don't need more overpopulation. The Horror! The horror...
Rivers Change Course: In 1858, a steamship sank in the Missouri. It was, in the last 20 or so years, dug up out of a Kansas farm. See SMITHSONIAN, Dec '06. http://www.smithsonianmag.com/history-archaeology/arabia.html S&P: Da Won Don't Stand No Dissin! Regulation: A ball of worms, and the worms are winning. Leftist Morality: They don't actually hate guns. They loved them in the '60s and '70s. But now they're large and in charge, and guns in the hands or us great unwashed are Bad, Bad, BAD! About 20 years ago I did some personal research on the subject of overpopulation. I discovered that in every county that has achieved stable or declining population, it was achieved within 20 years from the point when it was more- likely-than-not that at least two offspring would survive through puberty. Food security was a huge part of this.
So it might seem counter-intuitive that reducing food shortages would make the population stable or decreasing, but that is what the data shows, from centuries before the availability of artificial birth control right up to the present. |
