Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

It’s a week before the biggest day of her life, and Anna Williams is multitasking. While waiting to hear back from the Ivy League colleges she’s hoping to attend, the seventeen-year-old senior at one of Manhattan’s most exclusive private schools is doing research for a paper about organic farming in the West Bank, whipping up a batch of vegan brownies, and, like an increasing number of American teenagers, teaching her dog, José Saramago, to use an iPad.

Bird Dog,
A random note on dog-loving hotel chains follows: last year while staying at a Best Western in Benson, Arizona with my two dogs, I witnessed an Arab women complaining to the desk clerk about the hotel's dog-friendly policy.

The irate women waved her hand at her 8 or nine year old son's face saying he was covered with flea bites, and accused the hotel of "callously injuring" her son. I was only three feet away but could see no rashes or bumps on her son, and her husband, a slavik-looking European, was visibly embarrassed by her faked tirade.


As things wound down, the woman's appeals to get her next day's room for free gave away her game: if she'd really feared BW's dog policy she'd have looked for another hotel. But she really wanted free stuff, and appearances were she only bore an ethnic grudge against dogs (many cultures despise dogs and people who own them) but that that grudge would suffice to buttress her complaint.

In the end she got a break on her last night's stay, but she still left in a huff. My bet is that upon leaving she didn't b-line it to a pharmacy for benadryl cream for her son's "bites." Because there were none!

Exactly. Why is that so hard?

I don't even remember ever being told that, but I always knew. But then where I grew up just about every kid I knew, including me, had their own dedicated shotgun by the time of twelve or thirteen years old. And most were let out of the house with a .22 rifle before that.

Of course, I also grew up in a time when Lawn Darts were legal.

I use Koehler for dog training, a method so effective that political correctness has banned it.

(It started going downhill with Diane Bauman softening some of Koehler's methods, but shopping around for suitable dogs as a result)

Read about Koehler in Vicki Hearne's Adam's Task (ignore whatever blurb pap they've put on the covers of her books now - Hearne takes no prisoners), the essays on Washoe and How To Say Fetch in particular.

First thing I learned [before age 10 when I got my own .410] was that no gun is to be considered unloaded unless you have opened it and personally looked. The first thing I do upon being handed any weapon is check the chamber. In fact, I much prefer to check it even if you're holding it. ;->= Maybe especially in some cases.

I have witnessed at least two 'empty' weapons being fired. One was on the firing line at my AF training. Sheesh.
