Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Dog of the Week: Wirehaired Pointing Griffon (again)

Wirehaired Pointing Griffon, relatively rare in the US but an excellent, sturdy hunting breed. They look quite a bit like the Spinone.


I have hunted with them several times. Close hunters, they do not run around like maniacs and they do not tire. All they do is find the birds - and grumble if you miss them.

Good-looking, but does it shed? It looks like some kind of poodle to me, so probably wouldn't. Is it snappy? Good with kids? Lavishly affectionate? Am researching what to get when my elderly golden goes to the happy hunting grounds. Next to impossible to match a golden's unconditional love, but the doghair everywhere is hard to keep up with. Love or cleanliness?

These are working dogs, not so much family dogs. Serious, professional animals.

Ahh but then there is the run of the mill Labrador.... love, steadiness, hardy,and good with the kids..... and great for breaking shoes..Still memeber of the working dog class but I'd have to say blue collar with an occasional bout with white collar scene. Yep Labradors ....

Griffons are great dogs. Minimal, if any, shedding. Great with kids. Very soft temperments.

Thanks. Grew up with black labs in exile in London. Ferocious standoffs with the Serpentine swans and prudent retreats from the horses on Rotten Row. Sweet dogs apart from their persistence and guile at stealing food (one of ours could open the fridge)and lack of any protective instincts: our house was burgled twice and our black lab only woke up and started to bark when the K9 dog arrived. Wonder how a Griffin would do in a house with several miles a day walking but no hunting (no guns allowed because of emotionally troubled kids who obviously need a loving dog)

And for those less chauvinist than our beloved Bird Dog, who knows what delights await them in the arms of a woman both passionate and brainy?! Why settle for the amiable bimbo, when there are loving Cliffies in the world! Yes, we do exist! Tho most of us are married to Harvard men who are the only ones not too intimidated to discover our romantic side.

I don't care what they say, dogs have facial expressions. This dog is friendly and cheerful.

One of my dogs is part labrador or part golden (or maybe a bit of both) most likely mixed with German Wirehaired Pointer or Wirehaired Pointing Griffon. I have no idea (without paying for a genetic test), as I adopted her from the humane society, where she came in as a stray. She is sweet and charming and very funny; she is also independent-minded. She would be a great hunter, I'm sure. When it comes to learning and problem-solving, she can pick things up quickly, but she's not very reliable when it comes to doing certain things on command--her recall is not good, and she is inclined to pull on the leash because she'd rather be following scents or chasing critters.
