Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Black Friday

How come the 3% get all the media attention?

The media can take pix of the 3%.

No point in taking pix of people in PJs at computers--less'n they're babes in skimpies.

My wife asked whether I would drive her to Black Friday openings at 6 a.m.

I told her no, I'd rather go to work. So that's where I'll be. I normally will take her wherever and whenever she wants, but someone has to put their foot down on this silly insanity. She can drive herself and sit in the traffic jams and crazy crowds if she wants. The same junk stuff will still be there next week, and it's going to be just as cheap and will get cheaper--they want to get rid of it all by Christmas anyway.

Ah! The blessings of NOT exchanging gifts for Christmas. Years ago everyone in our family decided that the whole gift-giving thing was a bit much. Anything anyone needed or wanted they could get themselves and get something that was exactly what they wanted. This is true for us adults anyway.

Now, kids (and there are a few) will get gifts and get to go shopping for a few gifts to get for others. But nothing over the top and not too much time spent shopping.

But, we adults just stay away from all that nonsense. And I haven't really missed it. Time spent with family (except for the Obama supporters - who will be getting an earful from me this year - they had better take cover!!) is much better without all that craziness.

There's usually not much real news around Thanksgiving and they've gotta fill that "newshole" somehow.

Out of the newspaper reporting business for 10 years, I was surprised when returning to discover Black Friday. While I was gone, all newspapers had contracted with merchants and big stores, with every Monday-Wednesday before Thanksgiving informing readers of the biggest shopping day of the year and the three days after Thanksgiving telling readers what a great day retailers had. And, reporters are lazy and play follow the leader better than any other profession in the country.

Probably for the same reason you never see intelligent people on Jay Leno's Jaywalking All Stars ... sanity is boring ...
