Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Yankeeland, yesterday

I read in Mayflower about how the Pilgrims were astonished by the woodland autumn blaze of color. Europe doesn't have this. The storm will probably remove this year's magnificent display prematurely.


He also mentioned that America has 30 million Mayflower descendants. Not an exclusive club.

There are some wonderful reds and oranges in those leaves. Just beautiful!

(but the grouch in me says, "yuck, who's gonna have to rake up all those leaves!" I end up bagging about 45-50 large 30-gallon lawn and leaf bags each year. The optimist in me is hoping that Sandy blows them all away this year. yea!)

Three of my grandparents were born in Sweden and one in England. A friend who is into geneaology tells me that I have three prominent Mayflower passengers in my family tree. Huh?

Wonnefrul, wonnerful. I spent enough time in my childhood raking them. But worth it for the fall scenery.

When I was a kid Thanksgiving was a big deal. Twenty, thirty people - never have figured out who were blood and who were shirt tail. A no thank you helping of each dish would challenge Wimpy.

I lived in Germany for thirteen years and we had a blaze of fall color every year. I was kind of stunned to read that "Europe doesn't have this." Maybe just the UK doesn't?
