We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
“I can personally relate to a lot of the things Sue was saying about microaggressions against Asian-Americans,” said Christine Noh, a sophomore journalism student. “Yet I was never one to take offense to it- but I see it in a different light now.”
Woodward became a hero not because of WHAT he did, but WHO he did it to. Liberal Democrat politicians can do REPEATEDLY things any one of which would another’s career. These can range from the criminal to the absurd. Imagine if a Republican Presidential or ANY candidate had a girl get weak — “wait, give her some air….somebody give her a bottle of water” at EIGHT consecutive rallies as if it was an old burlesque routine where a singer pops up in the audience the way Al Jolsen was introduced as a kid. Obama pulled that and it was never mentioned in the press –even on Fox. Clinton was accused of rape by two different women and had another brought to his room by state police, when he proceded to “drop trou”…. result??? He is routinely declared a “political genius”. A republican can — after being misled about a foreign word and its meaning say “makaka” at a rally— career over. Get it?
Krauthammer's analysis read like it was written by a sychophant.
It lacked courage and insight, instead it was spin to make Romney look clever. Insted, Romney was apprehensive to deliver the knockout punch, and far too keen to be an interventionist (which is not what the populace wants.)
The incumbant has an advantage here, and Romney could not just coast from his first debate win. That attitude will work against him. This debate was a chance to identify some serious Obama shortcomings. By not taking that opportunity, I say Romney lost, even if it was a draw.
He could be right, of course. But, I don't think so. We'll find out Nov 6.
No, but it is an essential element of foreign policy. Bringing a murderer to justice strengthens the rule of law, and instills confidence in the U.S.
Even the hypothetical political consequences of failure are probably overestimated -- many Americans would have understood, had bin Laden been absent, or had the raid been repelled.
It would have been a foreign policy debacle and a political disaster. As it was, one helicopter crashed. Americans or innocent civilians could have been killed. Or American soldiers captured by the Pakistanis.
From my point of view the scam speaks volumes about art collectors.
I was always under the impression that one bought art in order to enjoy the piece. So if one pays a million for a painting one likes, how do you suddenly unlike it if it is discovered to be a forgery? The painting is no different than before the truth was learned. Obviously collectors don't enjoy their pictures unless painted by the proper artists.
It appears to me that art collecting is more about snobbery and elitism than actually enjoying the art.
--it does seem to be a one-of-a-kind market. In a certain sense, it's the model of a pure market --pure fear vs pure greed. Van Gogh is RIP anfd if money is no object, and a VG comes on mkt --the buyer's fear is 'now or never' for THAT painting, the seller's greed is is the same one-off condition.
And if the damn thing is worth thirty million, why wouldn't it be worth one hundred thirty million?
Answer is, no reason, no reason at all! So, the trade happens at the high number, tho it traded previously a few years ago at a quarter of that.
Not only is every object one-of-a-kind, so is every transaction.
And then there's the Rembrandt forger who got caught --but who was so good that the criminal notoriety kicked-started his own lucrative --and legit --career.
