Bow is the way to do it, the hard way. That's a lot of meat. A reader sent us a link to his pics. Here's one of them (I still think it's best game management to harvest the cows instead of the alpha males, but whatever).

I always wonder how one walks around the woods with a rack like that. I could not do it.

Agreed and the cows taste better but every wealthy Bubba wants the rack to show off.

Cows might taste better, but any elk is excellent tablefare. The reason to bowhunt them is to hunt the rut, when the bulls are bugling. That is the ultimate thrill. I'm no wealthy bowhunter. Though I've bowhunted elk in several states, all were self-guided hunts on public land.

Excellent. Never killed an elk with my bow, but I've killed lots of deer that way. Principle holds, does generally taste better than bucks. Both are wonderful.

However, sarcasm relative to economic status, choice of home decoration, choice of weapon, sex of animal, etc. are certainly out of place. Why the condescension, the name calling?
I hunt for fun & recreation, and do not have to justify it. I eat what I kill, and that is because I enjoy venison, not because I have to hunt to eat.
Please be happy for those who choose to live life differently than you. Ignore us if you like, and be content with your freedom to choose. But, please, leave the judgment and demeaning comments out of the discussion.

That's not quite the picture I was expecting/hoping to see with that line...

Reminds me of that FarSide cartoon "Nature scenes we rarely see" where the mighty stag jumps gracefully...and tangles his horns in a low-hanging branch!

Cow elk are much tastier than bulls, unfortunately those greatly desired, beloved and cuddly Canadian wolves have killed so many cows in our area just so they can eat the delicate elk fetuses, leaving the cows carcase for the ravens and worms.

We no longer have a cow season.

Awsome : As a Elkaholik Bow Hunter we in Alberta B.C. & Sask. have had to live with wolves since we Easterners arrived & shot all the Bison & Elk off the landscape , we pushed all the ungulates to the National Parks Rockies where they do not belong , so wolves & a exploding Bear pop. are dinning on Easter slopes ungulates , so we transplanted 200 wapiti in 1999 back to the Prairie where they belong , now a herd of 5000 +++ is flourshing & now Cows, Yes the Factory have to be Hunted , culled , Now this Herd has to be Harvested is what the new flavor of the month calls it , this is the most successfull Elk Transplant in History.

The "rack" can actually help the buck in thick cover. They put their chin up and head back and the rack lays down on their back and pushs right past the brush as they move through it. I have seen a bull elk (6:6) move swiftly and silently through brush so thick I couldn't follow. The rack works better then chaps to protect them from the rough branches.
