We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Regional sandwiches of America

The classic regional sandwiches of the US.


My favorites: BLT, Club Sandwich (with extra Mayo on the side), Po' Boy (fried oysters). Best of all? The Thanksgiving Leftovers Sandwich.


They omitted the classic Northeastern Italian-inspired sandwich: Fried eggplant on a hard roll. And what about the ordinary tuna sandwich? I like capers on mine.


I like 'em all though - except for Fluffernutter (h/t Marginal Rev)

I'm not a fan of fluffernutter at all.

My boys are, though. I love PBJ, they can't stand it. Don't know why.

Around here, down on the Rutgers campus, there is something known as the "Grease Trucks". My elder son introduced me to them. They are a frightening sight, but the food is amazing.

If you can eat a certain number (I think it's 6) sandwiches in an hour, you get to create and name a sandwich. As a result, these trucks are covered with all kinds of crazy sandwich concoctions - some are just amazingly good. Others I'm not sure I'd even go near.

Of course, if you saw the trucks themselves, you'd probably avoid eating there altogether. But it's worth it, I can guarantee you.

I'm not a fan of fluffernutter at all.

While I haven't had one for decades, the fluffernutter was one of my childhood favorites. Maybe I should revisit it.

My favorite these days is a BBQ sandwich. Cheap in the neighborhood.

Oh, and I forgot to mention. Taylor Pork Roll? God's gift to cardiologists. Oh Lord that is good stuff. I know I was raised on the Jersey Shore because I scarf that down like it's going out of style.

My boys love it, too. My wife can't stand it. Which just means more for us. Pork Roll with cheese. Pork Roll on a burger. I don't care what it's on, it makes everything better. I sent some Taylor out to a friend of mine in Cincinnati to keep him happy for a week.

I was unaware that BLT's are regional. What region? I was born in Massachusetts and I sure loved them.

There's nothing like the Thanksgiving Leftover sammich, but D'Angelo Sub shops (New England) have one called Thanksgiving Toasted available all year. Their website is dysfunctional, but : THANKSGIVING TOASTED $5.99, 6.99, 7.99 On a sub roll or as a wrap:
Thin slices of turkey breast topped with stuffing, cranberry sauce and mayonnaise. All toasted together and served with a side of hot gravy.

The beef on weck with scorching horseradish is classic Buffalo fare. its like eating a glob of wasabi straight up with beef drippings and lots of salt.

Here in Tucson, the sandwich du jour is the Sonoran hot dog. Loaded with stuff and chillies.

For fast food, Whataburger out here in the west has a green chile double burger that's tasty.

I guess my brain is too stressed out on politics right now. I opened your post expecting it to be some essay on the country - you know, the liberal coasts are the bread and the conservative middle is the meat - or some such image. But sometimes a sandwich is just a sandwich. (Looks mighty good, I must say).

Here is southern NJ, we're enjoying a great harvest of Jersey Tomato's which my wife and I indulge at every chance. We like em with mozzarella and oil or balsamic but keeping on topic, sliced Jersey uglies on toasted white or potato bread with mayo, salt and pepper is a treat we wait ten months for. It is heavenly...

I remember as a kid at my grandparents in Cape May getting fresh tomatoes straight out of the garden. Slice 'em, salt & pepper on toast. Excellent.

A local rib house around here has prime rib every Thursday. On Fridays he makes soup out of the leftovers as well as a shaved prime rib sandwich with onions and gravy which is to die for.

Love LOVE Fluffernutters! The 'true' kind of fluff, made in Lynn, MA, is hard to come by here in San Francisco. I finally discovered a store chain out here called World Market/Cost Plus that carries it. I scoop a couple a jars at a time. (I even order my Cain's Tartar Sauce online! Gotta have the real stuff.)

I second the roast beef at Kelly's. But it's got to be at the Revere Beach location. Something about the salt air. Route 1 in Saugus doesn't count.

Oh, and I'll second Taylor's Pork Roll. My family is from NJ and trips to visit always included these.
