Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Monday, September 3. 2012Monday morning linksToday is a holiday in the US, one in which we celebrate the antiquated, retrogressive (but once-necessary) union movement with beaches, beer, barbecuing, and fun. My celebratory efforts entail tennis in the morning and kayaking in the afternoon. How about you? There is no working class anymore:

Regarding low interest rates and why they aren't working, there is also this article:
http://www.zerohedge.com/news/guest-post-human-action-under-ultra-low-interest-rates Which is a pretty good analysis of the situation. If you believe, as Keynes and many others do, that consumption drives everything in the economy, then keep doing what you're doing. But before consumption you need production. Say's Law, essentially, is that production creates consumption. And a simple way of looking at whether this is correct is to think way back to our earliest ancestors. We needed to consume just enough food to survive. So the assumption is consumption is what drives everything, right? Wrong. It's a motivating factor, but consumption cannot occur without the production factor occurring first, either through hunting and gathering, or farming. Farming proved to be useful because rather than getting only as much as you needed while doing the hunter/gatherer thing, you could suddenly have surpluses. Surpluses led to better health (greater consumption) and the development of an economy (barter for other food and goods). Without production, you don't have surpluses and a better overall economic environment. Indeed, production created more consumption. And in times of economic peril, surpluses were used to stem the tide (think the story of Joseph in Egypt). This is a very rudimentary form of austerity, though the situation was typically forced on people due to drought. Consumption is a motivating factor, it is not what creates an economy. Interest rates at zero implies time has no value, which creates a host of new issues that need to be dealt with. QUOTE: 21 Ways Rich People Think Differently: World's richest woman Gina Rinehart is enduring a media firestorm over an article in which she takes the "jealous" middle class to task for "drinking, or smoking and socializing" rather than working to earn their own fortune. That's right! Everyone should get rich just like Rinehart did, by suing her stepmother for control of her father's multi-billion dollar estate. Her father was quite the entrepreneur too. "Nothing should be sacred from mining whether it’s your ground, my ground, the blackfellow’s ground or anybody else’s. So the question of Aboriginal land rights and things of this nature shouldn’t exist." "I would dope the water up so that {the aborigines} were sterile and would breed themselves out in the future." QUOTE: Why Aren't Low Rates Working? Bulldog: If you believe, as Keynes and many others do, that consumption drives everything in the economy, then keep doing what you're doing. Keynes called it "pushing on a string". Low rates won't drive consumption, most especially when you are at the zero-bound. http://wiki.fool.com/Push_on_a_string I'm well aware of what Keynes called it.
But, as the article I linked to points out, Keynes had no theory of capital and was bound to the attraction with consumption, rather than production, as the guiding force behind his theory. The idea that you can artificially (as we are now) making rates zero, through the creation of credit is not only incorrect, but its presumes that the issuance of credit can boost consumption - once again putting the cart before the horse. The key to growth, in a situation like this, is debt reduction and capital re-formation. Bulldog: I'm well aware of what Keynes called it.
You said, "If you believe, as Keynes and many others do, that consumption drives everything in the economy, then keep doing what you're doing," which concerned low interest rates. Bulldog: The idea that you can artificially (as we are now) making rates zero, through the creation of credit is not only incorrect, but its presumes that the issuance of credit can boost consumption - once again putting the cart before the horse. Cart before the horse, pushing a string. So Keynes would not rely on interest rates. In any case, even without monetary policy, interest rates would be low, simply because there's little investment. Rates are near the floor, which is why monetary easing is being considered. There's no place to go, and no appetite for stimulus. QUOTE: Mark Steyn: Racist dog whistles and the men who hear them That's right, years of the right claiming Obama is a foreign socialist muslim madrasah-educated atheist thug who won't recite the pledge of allegiance has no basis in xenophobia or racism. It's just policy disagreements. Based on the evidence it it more likely Obama was born in Kenya then Hawaii. Obama IS a socialist, belonged to a socialist church was mentered by socialist/communist andespouses socialist beliefs. Obama was educated as a muslim. He may not be an athiest but if you look at his political carear it is clear he is a thug. I don't know if he "won't' recite the pledge but I do know he chooses not to. Obama is not xenophobic it is Americans he dislikes. Obama is a racist.
Neither confirming or disagreeing simply stating the known facts.
So how many of you small business people / professionals are in the office today, working on the holiday trying to make enough money to keep your business open for another month, on the day dedicated to all the lazy-*** union workers who have driven this country down the toilet??
Been here from 8 a.m. this morning. I've always thought "Labor Day" was a massive insult to the people who are actually busting their buns trying to keep this country from collapsing. |
