We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
"I am, and ever will be, a white-socks, pocket-protector, nerdy engineer, born under the second law of thermodynamics, steeped in steam tables, in love with free-body diagrams, transformed by Laplace and propelled by compressible flow."
A rich inheritance, a big law settlement, tenure, a movie deal, a state sinecure — these enablers of elite liberal thought are all predicated on the less-liberal productive classes creating wealth to share. Behind every liberal philanthropist fortune is a huge capitalist score.
If pressed, he uses gallows humor to deal with the pain, referring to himself as a “recovering politician” and saying he “used to be the next president of the United States.” Another joke, a bit more wistful and a bit closer to the bone, comes when people tell him that he would have governed differently than Mr. Bush. Mr. Gore usually replies, “You know what: I would have just made different mistakes.”
Until November 2000, I was rather neutral about Al Gore, and voted third party in 2000. While I have disliked most of what Al Gore has said and done from the 2000 recount on, I like these jokes of his.
Well, the experimental method, for one, the foundation of the modern scientific method.
Islamic scientists also made significant contributions in mathematics, medicine, chemistry and engineering. During the Late Middle Ages, Christian scholars put great efforts into acquiring Arabic treatises, as they were far more advanced than comparable work in Europe.
1001 Muslim Inventions raises more questions about the decline of Muslim civilization than it answers, yet projects like 1001 Muslim Inventions have support at very high levels.
The decline is Islamic science is an important question. The Mongol conquests and the reversion to mysticism may be important contributors.
"Islamic scientists also made significant contributions in mathematics, medicine, chemistry and engineering. During the Late Middle Ages, Christian scholars put great efforts into acquiring Arabic treatises, as they were far more advanced than comparable work in Europe. "
I'm not a historian of science, but as I understand the Islamic contributions, it was for the most part in the way of recording, preserving, and disseminating what other civilizations had discovered in math and science, e.g., the advances in mathematics made in India. Of course, given that such a broadly embracing statement about Islamic science is offered by Zachriel, I have to believe it cannot be more than half-true, if that.
We provided a very important specific, the development of the experimental method and peer review. As you mentioned, they also helped preserve the fruits of pagan science. Whether you recognize the advancement of Islamic science and engineering, European scholars did, and eagerly sought Islamic manuscripts.
Yes, let's be more like China and spend ourselves into a financial crisis. Whoops....we already are.
Warren is such a dumba$$. I wonder if she's ever been to China. If she had, she'd know that the local governments in China are spending themselves into bankruptcy with costly ego-driven projects, each local government trying to outdo its neighbors for the sake of pride. The highways are crowded with cars. Traffic is unbearable. Public transportation is a mess...there are, after all, a helluva lot of Chinese who need to get from point A to point B. The air is polluted, and not just in the cities. If you want to see raw, ruthless, heartless capitalism in action, let China be your guide. Does the Communist government in China care for the needy? Fuhgeddaboutit. Go to Beijing where you can see hordes of pitiful, disfigured beggars near each of the major tourist attractions who have to beg a few coins from the tourists just to survive. Hey, do you want the government to force people to work 80 hours a week with no unions or rules to protect their health and safety? Then China is your cup of tea. Do you like garbage and trash in your rivers? What about chemicals in your food? Warren says, Emulate China. Is it acceptable to build a building or bridge with shoddy cement and have it fall down, killing people? Okaaaay, then, be more like China.
