We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Something I wish he could have noted is that it is not possible for government workers to read and understand these regulations either, which makes enforcement arbitrary. In every government regulated sector, it is the unelected that are not only enforcing laws, but interpreting them also. Most generally, at least in construction, the inspector does have some leeway and discretion, especially in rehabilitation projects. It is common in construction to know who the inspector is and what he is looking for more so that actually owning a copy of the code and reading it yourself.
Our good friend sits on our City Counsel, and had a great comeback to our Ambulance-chasing Mayor about personal freedom and liberty - "I never though I'd see it, but we've finally hit a milestone in this country, where as breathing is breaking the law"
He himself is a lawyer, and often comments that we're regulated ourselves so much that just standing still, doing nothing, can land you in court or jail. And, isn't sure how to make it retreat
