We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
An interesting/unfortunate dilemma you present.
No concern for Bob’s twists and turns over his extraordinarily creative career. He remains my bard, my most interesting American! Oh what a lyricist & musician and thought provoking artist.
I’m delighted with his award and the acknowledgement of his positive contributions to society. Much deserved!
But having it happen at the hands of B-hO makes my skin crawl.
To be clear, I would fell no different if a GOP’er had gifted him. They are all the same.
It’s just that B-hO is the sleaziest of them all, hence the bitter-sweet situation.
"A line will take us hours maybe; Yet if it does not seem a moment's thought, our stitching and unstinting has been naught."
Above, a Yeats for Bob's works. And below, another Yeats for Bob himself:
"An aged man is but a paltry thing, a tattered coat upon a stick, unless soul clap its hands and sing, and louder sing for every tatter in its mortal dress."
The Presidential Medal of Freedom is an award bestowed by the President of the United States and is—along with the comparable Congressional Gold Medal bestowed by an act of U.S. Congress—the highest civilian award in the United States. It recognizes those individuals who have made "an especially meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, cultural or other significant public or private endeavors".
So if I am reading that correctly, especially the "cultural or other significant public or private endeavors" part, the president can award the medal to anyone he wants to for any reason he wants.
Kind of waters down the value of the award to about $1.98 don't you think?
I guess my complaint is this.
If you want to give feel good presidential medals to Dylan or Morrison or Nobright, fine. Create another medal, say the Presidential medal of merit or something.
These people aren't in the same league as a deserving soul like JAN KARSKI who have literally earned a medal of FREEDOM.
