We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
"This town’s police department is conniving with the federal government to circumvent Massachusetts law — which is less permissive than federal law — to seize his livelihood and retirement asset. "
The teacher should be fired if only for posting that "fact of the day" about Romney. That level of propaganda has no place in the classroom (the deceased victim's sister has said the incident never took place). Apparently her students are more saavy than she.
Re Fast Science: John Ioannidis knows his statistics, and it is on that basis he has argued (elsewhere) that the results of many clinical trials are either wrong or misinterpreted or inconclusive. But the author of the linked article, Marya Zilberberg, is simply an idiot.
In her article she writes that "science is a slow process," in other words, the truth is not something you can rush. Sometimes it takes a lot of hard work to end up with a solid answer. Quick results, she seems to be saying, deserve appropriate skepticism. But then, openly contradicting herself, she abruptly goes into an all too common liberal rant that attacks global warming skeptics, accusing them of being anti-science global-warming "deniers":
"We hear a lot about how people are turning away from science. The state of Tennessee is about to descend back into the dark ages when superstitions instead of scientific theories dominated the classroom. A strong and largely anti-scientific lobby wants to bury any mention of human-driven climate change; fortunately, it looks like they are not succeeding."
Dark ages, indeed! Perhaps it would have been more consistent with the main thesis of her article had she described AGW and the Climategate scandal as the perfect examples of bad "Fast Science." But no, instead she gives us a polemic that targets the skeptics who are, after all, only asking for scientific proof of AGW claims---and would welcome much more extensive research and the kind of "Slow Science" the author herself claims to support.
OK. I've had it. Obama uses his parting remarks at the end of the NATO conference to dis Romney by saying that Bain making a profit for investors was not the job the POTUS (he) does. "The POTUS must consider ALL the people." Therefore, ording to the Won, Romney's tenure at Bain is not applicable to a resume worthy of The Presidency.
Well, gosh darn. Working as a trainer for ACORN is? Suing CitiBank to force them into making loans to people unqualified under due diligence is? Lecturing at the U. of Chgo on Black Liberation Theology and the law is? Spending/wasting $50 million trying to get schools to teach social rebellion v. math, science, reading and writing is?
"In a news conference from Chicago at the end of the NATO summit, President Obama said Monday that using Bain Capital to question Mitt Romney’s economic credentials is not only fair game, but part of his core argument against his Republican foe in the coming general election campaign."
This from a guy whose failed economic policies have put (and kept) millions of Americans out of work in the slowest economic recovery since the Great Depression. I'm at a loss to see the dazzling intellect of the so-called Smartest Guy in the Room. This is a losing campaign argument for Obama because each time he mentions Bain, Team Romney is going to highlight the pathetic unemployment figures under Obama since 2008. It's plain to me that what Obama will need to win re-election is more cowbell. Nothing less will do. More cowbell.
Did you not find it ironic that under #3, she lists the "one size fits all" approach to religion vs evolution, the same for "human-driven climate change", and the same for the anti-vaccination folks.
Yet in the very next para, she laments the "schools have failed spectacularly in their duty to educate kids about the process of science, while at the same time arming them with the “single-right-answer-to-every-question” attitude toward knowledge"
She is a pot, calling the kettle black, and cannot see it.
