We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
So many issues come up in the course of a presidential term and so much of what happens can’t be predicted in advance that it makes a certain amount of sense to vote for the person rather than the platform.
But whether or not this is a smart way to vote, in the real world it is the way many Americans do vote, and Mitt Romney has to figure out how he can make a stronger personal impression on undecided voters.
It isn’t an easy problem to solve. One senses that Romney is more George H. W. Bush than Bill Clinton; he comes from a world where privacy is valued and where sharing can seem like showing off.
Fraud at the African-American Studies Dept. at UNC!?
African-American Studies IS fraud. So is Women's Studies - another make-victim studies. Looking over their degreed curricula, I don't see Western Civilization, but I do see Peace, War, and Defense. Sheesh!
"I'm not going home with you"--No wonder men are confused about what women want or don't want. Is honesty obsolete?
Marriage between homosexuals--Marriage is between a man and a woman. Fix the laws if we must so loving couples can later divorce or inherit what little is left of the estate (but that doesn't make it right), but it's not a human rights issue, never was, never will be. Killing unborn children is.
Glad to know the troops are fighting for Obama..."hope" he has enough "change" (I don't) to pay their salaries.
Time to terminate subsidies, period...
Academia has become big business with little or no accountability, paid for by taxpayers with no real vote in how they spend. End their subsidies. If students and parents can't afford college, then colleges need to change. I went 5 years to state college (4 years of room and board) on minimum wage and one healthy $1000 scholarship (in '75 $1K bought something). School cost $3K a year. It should cost $10-12K annually today. All else is waste.
I have a great sympathy with the former Navy SEAL, Benjamin Smith in his letter about Obama's shameless takeover of credit for the killing of Osama bin Ladin. The man's arrogance and childishness is breathtaking. Obama has carefully concealed the fact that Admiral Mulraven, a former SEAL himself, was the executive who managed the details of the raid and is largely responsible for its success, along with the dedicated men who carried out the operation. All that Obama can honestly claim credit for is saying, in essence, "Okay, let's you and him fight," as the old story goes.
In my research I've learned that the training of each of these immensely skilled fighters costs the government approximately one million dollars apiece [it may be even more now; my research was done in the 1990s]. Mr. Obama could never concentrate long enough to learn what these supermen have got to do. Obama is a member of what my brother-in-law calls the SASS [short attention span society]. So Mr. Obama has earned his place on what the SEALs call on their website The Wall of Shame, on which they enter the names of all the would-be SEALs who are claiming kudos for what they've never done.
