Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Cool links this morning.
Stone Age hunters That was interesting. I hope they follow up on that undersea expedition - it would be cool to find more evidence. gourmet liver paté and dog food? I know I couldn't. However I can tell the difference between Diet Pepsi and Diet Coke in a blind taste test. I can also tell Mountain Dew from other sweet colas in a blind taste test. I'm weird that way. Lying and deception can be justified, says climate change ethics expert Reminds me of the famous quote from the raid on Bến Tre: "'It became necessary to destroy the town to save it." Lying and cheating is never justified, however James Garvey's tortured logic on this subject goes a long way to explaining just how devolved the liberal intellectual mind set has become. QUOTE: ".....from a consequentialist point of view, a lie might be justified if it has good consequences. I’m careful to say that I don’t know whether or not the lie is justified on consequentialist grounds, because it depends on how things play out. I don’t think a lie is just a lie, so I’m not sure whether or not Gleick was wrong to do what he did." How's that for clear headed thinking? In clear language that quote is translated as "Lying for the greater good can be justified if it does some good but one can never be sure it does good so I can't say with any sort of conviction that lying is an ethical and moral option.l" Moron. Dems Urge Saudi Arabia to Pump More Oil... I have never figured that out. We've got more nat gas and oil in the US and Canada than the entire Middle East (a slight exaggeration, but that's ethically ok according to James Garvey), but we can't become independent for some reason. Stupid. My dog turns up her nose at brocolli and brussels sprouts. Either of those in her steamed brown rice is enough to put her off.
Presumably she'd reject liver paté too. Lying and deception. "Fake, but accurate" immediately comes to mind.
The comments in that first link are hilarious, and also a perfect insight in the left's love of science only if filtered through the correct political assumptions.
The Cherokees have been claiming European ancestry forever. For decades, anthropologists and historians put this down as false and based on racial envy. Now the evidence is moving in the other direction.
The reality will be that groups that came from Europe interbred with those from the Siberian route and the Polynesians. Neighboring peoples always mix it up (even if they won't admit it). Can't find any previous movie with a larger gap between audience approval and critical dis-approval. The numbers are like 85% thumbs up from the movie-goers versus 15% professional critics.
After all, the critics whine, its not a balanced movie! Where are the racist American soldiers, none of the SEALS exhibit emotional disfunction and do you realize none of them are gay? Actually, personally I wondered about the two villains being Russian not Saudi or Iranian. But I guess they wanted to show the teams going up against the other sides A Team. So, how many times are YOU planning on seeing Act of Valor? It is the only movie I've seen in a theater in over 15 years. I was looking forward to it in fact something that normally would leave me terrified.
I get a plot that goes to great pains to make sure we know that the largest terrorist plot against America is perpetrated by a Russian Jewish millionaire who is a terrorist mastermind, kills a CIA agents and then helps smuggle jihadists wearing bomb belts into the United States from Mexico. No thanks - I'll take a pass on seeing it again. Fool me once and all that. Regarding the question of the recently "re-discovered" North American continent one should wonder why the place was deserted. Only continent on the earth with no inhabitants as of a few thousand years ago.
South and Central America had folks 30k+ years ago. None of them could walk up here in all that time? Don't give me the "ice age" crap. There were "ice ages" galore with human participants thriving. Ever heard of the "eskimo"? So what possible reason would N. America need to be "discovered" so many thousands of years after the rest of the world was walked, canoed, mapped, and civilized? "In Egypt, the President hesitated when the people called for Hosni Mubarak’s ouster, but wound up supporting his overthrow in the end. Now, though, the Muslim Brotherhood is within inches of grasping power, the country’s peace treaty with Israel is being questioned, and pro-democracy American workers there are facing criminal trial."
Jimmy Carter's ineptitude left us with the Iranian proto-nuclear terrorist state we have today. Barack Obama's and Hillary Clinton's ineptitude is about to leave us with a repressive Islamist state in Egypt. Foreign policy is obviously not a strong point of the Democrats....not to mention that they are math challenged when it comes to balancing the federal checkbook, of course. Foreign policy is obviously not a strong point of the Democrats.
Their incompetence at foreign policy is the initial reason why I stopped voting Democratic. Little by little I discovered that their incompetence was not confined to foreign policy. The only foreign policy at which Democrats are competent is choosing what to eat at an ethnic restaurant. The more telling question is, how many liberals can tell the difference between canned dog food and the New York Times?
In the 80s my German grandfather came to Canada to visit. He got up early one morning and made himself toast with liverwurst from the bowl in the fridge.
Of course the liverwurst was dog food, and not gourmet dog food at that. My embarrassed mom told her father in law what he had eaten. He, having achieved the calmness of age, replied that Canada must be a rich country if we could feed such excellent liverwurst to our dogs. |
