Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Why is it?

The food stamp program, part of the Department of Agriculture, has announced that is pleased to be distributing the greatest amount of food stamps ever.


Meanwhile, the National Park Service, also part of the Department of Agriculture, asks us to "Please Do Not Feed the Animals" because the animals may grow dependent and not learn to take care of themselves.

Things that make you go, hmm.

But I think the reason is that if the animals become dependent and must be fed, then it will come out of the NPS budget without increase. Whereas, the purpose of the food stamp program is dependency and so an increase in usage is directly usable in the petition for more funding.

In government, as in crime, you follow the money.

Perhaps there needs to be an investigation of the National Park Service. We got a brochure in Yellowstone last summer telling about the destruction of the environment being caused by species of fish that were not "genetically pure." The same brochure encouraged fishermen to "kill invasive species" (of fish).

Evidently someone didn't read the political correctness memo.

Good grief! You expect something called "the Department of Agriculture" to be ... consistent?!?

An increase in the allocation of food stamps (didn't know that was DOA's turf, thanks) feeds the bureaucracy -- as does signage that warns against feeding the (other) animals. Anything that stuffs the beast.

For some animals, after all, dependency is quite a good thing -- namely, the ones with a conscience. Just learn to discriminate; clearly the DOA's 'crats do.
