We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Here in MA, after someone investigated, they found that the head of the REPUBLICAN party in this state, only donates to democrat campaigns! Talk about a party not existing!
"Obama now echoes Palin on energy" Wearing her dress, high heels, and lipstick, and doing it badly. Not believable, Barry.
"Paul Krugman and David Brooks are titans of the columnist scene, the best and most influential pundits the left and right have to offer." Brooks? Right? I can hardly type, I'm laughing so hard.
That was great. I had a dinghy just like that when I was a kid - it is a fairly popular design. Mine was a little different in that the mast was more midships allowing for a small jib and the centerboard wasn't a dagger board.
The clinker/lapstrake build technique is very old, very Nordic in concept. There are examples of clinker built vessels going all the way back to 350 AD predating the mortise/tenon/peg pin techniques that classical Mediterranean civilizations used.
The history of the clinker technique is fascinating. Almost the whole entire British sea empire was built around the clinker technique starting with something they swiped from the Vikings called the Norfolk Wherries which are double ended, round bottom keeless boats (there was a vessel called a Keel Wherry, but it was clumsy) and have also been around for a long time. Clinker builds result in lighter, more handy vessels as compared to other techniques.
Would MF readers please supply information regarding the length of time necessary to complete a Medical Degree? How many years after receiving a B.A degree does it take to become a medical doctor? How about after receiving a B. Sc degree?
The UK has run out of money, but there's nary a word in that Telegraph article about cutting government spending in order to balance the budget. Britain's problem is the same as America's: her politicians are unwilling to cut spending and look only for more ways to increase the revenue side of the ledger. When an economy stalls, governments should cut spending and steadfastly resist the Keynesian temptation to go deeper into debt. When countries are already deeply in debt to the tune of a very large proportion of their GDP, spending cuts will get the economy back on track faster than will increased government spending. Greater borrowing for greater spending sends the wrong signals, and eventually you run out of not only your own money, but also out of willing lenders.
Heh!! When I saw that "Boers in Georgia" I seriously thought it meant the Sovereign State of Georgia just west of South Carolina and east of Alabama.
I thought it because I've met an uncommon number of both English and Afrikaans South Africans in Atlanta. I figured the trend had picked up steam, or something.
