| | Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

How the unassuming, philanthropic, and low-profile Kochs were selected as bogeymen of the year I do not know. They are known to be supporters of Libertarian and free market organizations so I suppose, by a certain sort of logic, the Left must always demonize defenders of freedom. As we have noted countless times here, the Left never includes individual freedom in their political calculations (unless it's about sex). That is not an oversight; it's because We The People are viewed as the feckless masses requiring Ivy League overlords to make our decisions for us. To which we peasants say "Basta!" Is real democracy consistent with maintaining liberty? The ancient Greeks said it wasn't. They believed that democracy was mob rule, and our Founders decided that they were correct. The modern Greeks are proving it again. As we have also repeated claimed here, individual liberty, unlike money, really is a zero-sum game. Every drop accrued by the State is a drop taken from me whether it is meant to be "for my own good" or not. We're all here for the freedom, not for the government. The American Spirit is to be annoyed with government, and to view it as a necessary evil but limited in its powers. Still, it seems odd to me to select a couple of wealthy Libertarians as targets.

It is odd that the Koch brothers have been targeted. What is actually more odd is how the Occupy protesters are defining democracy these days. They even reject "mob rule" when it doesn't accommodate their desires. One of the greatest gifts our founding fathers provided was to make sure everyone had access to a decent education. But as the adage goes "You can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink." I am more convinced each day that the current political battle is really a battle between good and evil. As the article you referenced points out, Obama is openly declaring war on many individuals and organizations he considers his enemies; people whose interests he has sworn to defend. Obama did not buy the presidency as the Koch brothers are trying to do! Were you griping about what was going on when Bush's patriot act was being crammed down our throats under the guise of safety? Probably not. It's ironic that you are probably not part of the 1%, but would gripe about Obama and occupy Wall Street, while never marching for the civil rights of others. You sit, and you gripe. And, you vote against your own best interests because of your stupid beliefs. Sad -- folks like you would have the government in our vaginas, but not in the viagra bottle. You would sanction voter suppression, even though women fought to vote. Apathetic and pathetic -- as long as you can throw darts at Obama, you'd give up any freedom you could ever have. Democracy and Liberty are two entirely different things. Democracies generally destroy themselves quickly. Republics and constitutional monarchies generally take longer to commit suicide - more obstacles separating the mob from the treasury. Funny, as often as I've railed against the Thermageddon mongers, and their banking and government masters, I have yet to receive any EEEEEEEvilBigOil/BigCoal© money from the Koch brothers...or Don Blankenship...or ExxonMobil. I'm starting to feel unloved. I live surrounded by liberals. They don't know why they hate the Koch Brothers. They just hate the Koch brothers. They have a vague idea that they are oil (bad) and libertarian (bad) and rich (bad). It's really quite shocking. On the other hand, the conservatives don't really understand why they hate Soros. Maybe the columnists do, but the average conservative just knows that Soros made money by betting against the British pound (which is legal), and he funds liberal causes (also legal) and he says nasty things about conservatives (also legal). So everybody needs an enemy. The difference is that in the case of the Koch brothers, it's the President of the US -- he is demonizing US citizens. That's wrong. Funny that the Kennedy clan is two out of the three - and Libertarian when it comes to themselves, just not everyone else. I always figured they needed somebody to counterbalance The True Evil Demon, Soros! Moral equivalence and all that. Their names came up, were new, so the Libs fixed on them. No intelligence needed, and certainly none used, considering the Kochs have supported some liberal institutions/causes. BD, how come no comment link for the poetry post before this?? Not that I have any comment. They will never mention George Soros, with a net worth ~$25 billion, who meddles in politics much more than the Koch brothers. I thought that Soros was much wealthier than the Koch brothers, but it turns out that the net worth of the brothers combined is comparable to Soros. Who cares who the Koch brothers are- most of the liberal progressive Democrats who are attacking them know nothing about them, their businesses, what they do, or who they support. To these ignorant fools, they simply are 'evil' and it is better if they are faceless and unknown because this simply makes it easier to hate them. I've read 1984- it would be better for the left to simply invent a nonexistent person and be done with it. Perhaps because they want to strip-mine America, poison our kids, destroy unions and do away with social security, for starters. The thing I never understand is where do these people think they'll live once the whole planet is polluted? http://www.google.com/search=koch_bros Really??? Well, I don't know about the strip mining bit. And the "poison our kids" thing sounds like typical liberal reactionary tripe. But, if they are going to destroy unions and do away with social security, then I am all for it! Both represent failed liberal idiocy! Go to North Korea- as I understand it, they don't mine or farm or do anything at all productive with the land. You'd like it there- they hate liberty and freedom and life and private property. |
