Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

re Gingrich robocall: Romney forced Holocaust survivors to eat human flesh non-kosher
While I agree this is a distortion, let's not forget who started this type of thing. Romney. He is one ruthless SOB. Recall he was way behind Newt In IA and his character assassination campaign worked. Up to that point, Newt was concentrating his fire on 0bama. But let's not forget the larger point here. The scorched earth campaign being waged by both sides in the primary may cause a significantly weaker nominee to emerge. http://legalinsurrection.com/2012/01/romney-is-winning-his-battles-but-losing-our-war/ Gingrich is a toxic person? So is Romney. Evidence, please? Negative ads are not in themselves unfair.

Bad link. The "h" is missing from "http." This link should work, and by virtue of this verbiage after the link, get by the spam filter. Ditto Joe Luke's comments on the old NYC photos. When I was in NYC a year ago visiting cousins in SoHo, I noticed a rarity- some new construction in the neighborhood. Nearly all the buildings in SoHo could have been in those century old photos. Regarding "free" preventive services: tanstaafl. If the insurance companies cover these services without using a copay, the cost of the service comes in two forms: higher premiums and reduced reimbursements to providers. People who believe these services are "free" are -- well, they are liberals and "progressives".
Any employer should be able to work with any insurer, if the employer and the employees wish, to offer a package of healthcare benefits or a cafeteria of benefits. Without a government that wants to manage healthcare, we'd be free to choose a lot more. If someone wants contraceptive coverage more than that person wishes to teach at a Muslim school, let that person teach elsewhere. Thanks to folks who began to help me understand "Light Squared". I would love to know exactly what it is, how it works, and Why it is supposed to improve life, or be important to the market, etc. Please do provide more information regarding this subject! Thank you.
Weakness always invites war. So the question is why did Obama decide to weaken our military? If, as he and other Democrats have said, welfare and unemployment payments help the economy and create jobs, why wouldn't military spending do the same thing? Is a dollar spent to keep someone out of work any more beneficial to the economy then a dollar spent to rebuild a Humvee or buy body armor or enlist another marine? What was behind the decision to weaken our military?

There is also this: "A controversy is brewing over three reputable Christian organizations, which are based in North America, whose efforts have ousted the words “Father” and “Son” from new Bibles. Wycliffe Bible Translators, Summer Institute of Linguistics (SIL) and Frontiers are under fire for “producing Bibles that remove “Father,” “Son” and “Son of God” because these terms are offensive to Muslims.” http://moonbattery.com/?p=7545 In re "Obama sandbags the Archbishop" I do not understand how the administration, by itself, has the power to allow anyone a free pass from a requirement of the law (for a year or for any length of time). If the law requires something I presume it requires the same thing of all Americans equally.
Dionne wants "relief" for Roman Catholic institutions, understandably. But isn't that request more properly aimed at Congress for a legislative solution, or the courts if he wants to join the Obamacare cases already making their way to resolution (heh!), instead of the executive branch? Re: Islamist... Threats of violence work. Perhaps we should give it a try.
FDR's diplomatic initiatives against the Japanese Empire in 1940 and 1941 were not backed up by US military capability, in part because of treaties limiting defense installations in the Philippines and the prevailing sense of isolationism and the neglect of preparedness.
The massive military buildup in the Pacific that began when war was becoming more of a risk was not scheduled for completion until Spring, 1942, giving the Japanese a closing window of opportunity to attempt a crippling strike against Allied forces throughout the Pacific. The conditions in 1941 and 2012 are not directly comparable except to point out the obvious: weakness invites challenge. Thanks so much for the Pig War story. I have lived here all my life and NEVER heard that one.
This is one of the MANY reasons to stop by Maggie's Farm every day. Can anyone tell me why no one is covering the lawsuit in Georgia regarding Obama's eligibility to be President? Is this not news? Important? Pig War is fun; Obama is not.
Ditto on Joe Luke, also love the pics of Philadelphia (my home).
