We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
[The rationalists] have got rid of the Christian God, and now feel obliged to cling all the more firmly to Christian morality ... When one gives up Christian belief, one thereby deprives oneself of the right to Christian morality. Whoever tries to peel off this fundamental idea—belief in God—from Christian morality will only be taking a hammer to the whole thing, shattering it to pieces.
Frederick Nietzsche (h/t Dr. Bob, who seems to be on blog sabbatical or retirement)
Nietzsche doesn't just get bad press --he gets the ultimate worst possible press --his warnings about the coming special tyranny of freedom are almost universally thought to have been endorsements. In the same way that the left is using Orwell's 1984 as a 'how to' rather than a how-not-to guide.
Great trick when talking to young people:
Ask them to articulate the moral limits of euthanasia, abortion - or simply explain why the powerful should not dominate the weak, or why prostitution should be illegal - without recourse to received Judeo-Christian notions of individual human worth.
They can't do it - the loudest-braying young (and old) atheist turks cannot articulate a moral code that reproduces the free, equal society they inherited from the Judeo-Christian world they've discarded.
Of course the young all assume THEY are the Nietzchian supermen who will come out on top.
"Oh, no, doctor - when you asked me about pulling the plug on patients who are a burden, I thought you meant the guy in the next bed - not me!"
