"President Obama Stands Up to Big Oil"

So says Robert Redford. (But, I ask, who will stand up against Big Hollywood?)


I think our readers understand that this is not about "Big Oil." "Big Oil" is a straw man. This is about a supply of cheap energy for Americans, and a supply that does not come from the Middle East or from Venezuela. The moonbats, who depend on energy as much as I do for daily life, appear to believe that it grows on trees.


How does Redford heat all of his houses? And does he care what it costs him? Would he care if his estate in Aspen lost heat this winter?


During his campaign, Obama promised to raise the cost of energy. He and his EPA have been doing their best to do that. Makes no sense to me. Now Canada's fuel will be used in China instead of here. What sort of accomplishment is that?

Some day, when the world is crabbing at us for having wrecked the global economy with our indebtedness, these resources will be developed. Either by the Chinese and others with lengthy concessions (or "in perpetuity?") or by ourselves. But the coal and minerals will come out of the ground and the oil will flow. The question is - who will benefit most?

Did I read that the Canadian company has indicated it will try again by submitting another application for this pipeline? Good on 'em. At least they're thinking about their southern neighbors, which is more than the current executive caretakers seem to be doing. This action by the WH is the abandonment of a potential win-win in favor of pure politics. But some folks apparently have no shame, especially if it will get them re-elected.

Of course you understand that those of us who are members of the proletariat will not be able to pay for energy, he will. That as long as he's comfortable, who cares about anybody else.

Yes, the oil will be pumped onto a Chinese or flag of convenience tanker, sail through narrow foggy straits between the US and Canada before heading across the largest ocean. No environmental risk there

That is what I don't get. Of all the choices for shipment (pipe, rail, or truck) pipeline seems to be the "safest". Maybe all those towns along the route think they can catch more of the income stream with all those truckers (sleeping in the truckstop.) Or waiting for the "unit train" to cross the road will cause people to pull off the road into their business.
Another question would be: Why doesn't Canada build the refinery and employ more of their own? Capture the return on value added products.

"Standing Up To Big ____" is the entire point. It makes liberals feel good, like they are stickin' it to The Man or something. It is an adolescent's approach to governance and politics, and has been in place for decades.

I think Obama is standing up to Big Decent Government. And Redford has been standing up to Big IQ all his life. His best movie, Downhill Racer, wasn't named after the skiing up on the screen but after his side of the various conversations he had with the cast and crew on the set during filming.

"Standing Up to Big Oil" my foot. About a year ago, The Wall Street Journal had a whole section on our already proven shale oil and gas reserves within the boundaries of the United States. According to the Wall Street Journal, and the American Petroleum Institute, both impeccable sources, when the Bakken Shale, the Marcellus Shale, and other, more recently explored fields like Eagles Ford were proven to contain enough oil and gas to fulfill our country's needs for the next hundred years, and do it cleanlywe should have heaved a huge sigh of relief. According to this article, and to what I've learned from the API, these resources are entirely our own, the petroleum producing techniques used in developing them have been proven safe and in use for some time. The greenie meanies have been in an uproar about this and currently are trying to prove that producing this oil and gas will contaminate the ground water, but the gas and oil are safely hundreds of feet below the ground water sources and the oil companies can produce them through slant drilling which will avoid any possible contamination.

So sorry, guys. You're going to have to delay your plans to turn our country into another government run mess.

This has the liberal elite in a swivet, since it fouls up their master plan of bankrupting the coal companies and through them the energy companies so that they can nationalize them and thus take control of another segment of our formerly free market society.

The Eagle Ford shale hasn't been squelched by those idiots, in any case. It's causing an amazing boom in South Texas and the San Antonio area. I know many people who have headed out from here on the coast into the area up near I-10 where everyone is crying out for more homes and other infrastructure. It's an astonishing boom in an area that's been economically sleepy for decades. It's producing new jobs like nobody's business.

I have read that killing XL now will allow re-filing with a new route satisfactory to the State that was blocking it, whereas letting time run past February would cause an automatic kill without allowing re-filing.

And PotUS recently seemed to support our in-country shale fields, notably Pennsylvania.

Of course, he has claimed to support nuclear as one of the "alternative" power sources - but not done a thing to help there. And coincidentally Pennsylvania is a problem for him, with a number of Electoral votes that could go either way this year.

The only reason XL was killed was political, period. The route had been studied for 3 years already! The aquifer everyone is so concerned about is crossed by over 25,000 miles of pipeline already! If POTUS supported shale fields in PA, that was political, too! Property owners in NY already having vertical gas wells on their property are not allowed to companies employ fracking (horizontal recovery) for the last 4 years because the greenies are blocking it. But NY is a safe blue state, so Obama can skip support for them. Obama is killing job growth period. Oh, did I mention stonewalling permits for offshore drilling????
