Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Why? Because they appreciate slack and know how to use it. Indeed, if not for state sponsored racial discrimination, most of the students in the UC system would be Asian." Will Harvard Stop Trying to Impose Orthodoxies?
No because modern universities, along with modern liberalism, mistakenly believe above all else that inequality is not a cultural norm - equality is the norm. And the elite define the cultural norms because they are most equal among equals and thus get to decide what the norm must be along with the imposition of this view on those who are less equal. Rant du Jour: The World’s Most Dishonest Newspaper Thus proving my original point. Comrade NYT is more equal than the rest of us Comrade Proletarians and are thus free to define what the less equal should be thinking. Even though we're all equal in theory. It is one of those Quantum Foam things - strange but true. By no definition I am aware of is Mitt Romney a conservative; he is whatever flavor that will get him elected. People who live in Massachusetts might be more aware of this than others.
Not clear how Romney can reduce tax revenue while adding soldiers and doubling Navy shipbuilding. It is easy to make promises when you do not present a budget.
And why those figures for troops and ships? Is it based in reasoned, strategic thinking or is he just trying to buy votes? Does being conservative require a Hitlerian buildup of armed forces, even if the absence of any national enemy? Some at Harvard think inequality is a problem? I thought highly selective schools were dedicated to inequality. Maybe Harvard should institute a lottery for admission and a summer lottery to choose the faculty for the coming year. Tenure should become a thing of the past.
I'm willing to bet the insanity that pushes and supports Occupy Copenhagen is comprised of the denizens of Christiania.
My uncle, no doubt, is part of the Occupy movement (he has always been considerably radicalized, the main reason he went to Copenhagen was to dodge the draft). He is a somewhat reasonable man, but has always been very political. Even at times when we take politics off the table, he insists in reinserting it, simply because it's what drives him - the opportunity to 'kill capitalism'. Occupy Copenhagen, like all the Occupy cells, will fail because they can't get out of the way of themselves, their inconsistencies, and their basic stupidity regarding human behavior. Christiania, as I pointed out in a post here on Maggie's, has failed. It was the original "Occupy" movement, way back when. It collapsed on itself. The blog piece on the New York Times was pretty good until the injection of the "Jewish Rug Salesman" part. I think a simple "Rug Salesman" would have been sufficient for the author to make the point. Clearly injecting the "Jewish" part was meant to have another meaning, which I will not comment on.
I prefer to believe it was just a misguided commentary, and I think I'm probably right. But others may not be so forgiving. I am kind of surprised that Maggies occasionally links to Takimag and Taki himself. There is a long history there of racist and anti-Semitic undertones or blatant statements on the part of the proprietor and his contributors.
I'm not in the business of enforcing political correctness or using accusations of bigotry as a means of discrediting some commentary I may not like. But hearing people espouse things I basically agree with (90% of content) tied to gratuitous slurs or worse (10% of content) gives me great pause. Ugliness and mean-spiritedness attaches to adjacent arguments unless those who share the adjacent argument push back. I have no time for the Takis, Steve Sailors, Pat Buchanans, and various apologists for the Confederacy, truthers, and zanier Paulbots, even if we sometimes agree on some factual or policy matters. I hope that if I were on the Left I would likewise push back against the equivalent types on that side. ...that's because it creeps in like the fog on little cat feet --
I'll be forgiving of most comments, as I was with this one. Sometimes it's an unconscious statement of fact. Other times, it's, as you said a "gratuitous slur". The slurs are what worry me.
I'm not willing to align myself with someone who agrees with me, if they engage an attitude of racism or prejudice. I'm not in the business of "the enemy of my enemy is my friend." Hatred is hatred, pure and simple. It can be masked, but when it isn't, there is no reason to accept because you agree on other issues. I think the comment in the article may have been more unconscious than anything else, but I'm not familiar with the site's general tone. If it is, indeed, even mildly racist or anti-Semitic, that's a big problem for me. --Instapundit (at 8:24 A.M. today) links to Michael A. Walsh,
http://www.nypost.com/p/news/opinion/opedcolumnists/hey_remember_this_guy_L7HnrH4rTOZHgR4vwjCrYI#ixzz1itKvR12h writing about the pell-mell law-shredding by the govt in DC, "...a farce that apparently will continue until a responsible Congress, not to mention a new president, takes office next January. And maybe not even then, given the corrupt state of a permanent governing class that bipartisanly enriches itself via “public service” by trading on insider information." === But 'trading on insider information' is not even the half of it. DC is not simply inside-trading, DC is now doubled-down --corruption 2.0 --inside-trading on demand creating its own purpose-made supply of info made-to-corruption-order. I have visited the site, Taki's, once or twice before, maybe from a link from here, not sure, doesn't matter.
Didn't notice anything overtly or covertly racist. I worked up many words to say in this comment. Deleted them all. It isn't about race, it's about culture, or lack of same. I could give a shit less about melanin content. |
