We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
I don't think that this ugly hatred on the part of Arabs toward the Israelis is too difficult to understand. The land that the Israelis now occupy has been theirs for thousands of years, while the Arabs were still camping out in the sand dunes with their smelly camels. When the Arabs were pressured by the Balfour Agreement in 1917 [IIRC], which was signed by the losers in the First World War, they determined to live up to the letter of the agreement by yielding a barren scrap of land to the Jews and suggesting "hah, let's see you try to make this profitable."
What they never expected is that Jewish energy and brain power would turn that scrap into a Paradise of cultivated fields, advanced science and technology, and the foundation of the most truly civilized country in the entire Mid-East.
Now that the hard work and innovation has paid off so outstandingly, they want to take it back
It goes even a step further, MM. At some point (probably at the building of the Berlin Wall) the Communist 'worker's paradise' promise began to lose credibility as offering to the people a real economic alternative to the quality of life inside the western systems.
There was only one direction the USSR could take its narrative --that the superior western output was being purchased at the cost of raping the Mother Earth --the raw materials, the pollution, the whole industrial revolution as far back as ''dirty'' London the home of the Industrial Revolution as told by Dickens, were all launched as memes in support of a ''green alternative'' --Soviet Communism.
But there stood Israel --right there in full view, using the western system to turn a patch of wasted desert into an economic powerhouse, doing the very opposite of the Soviet analysis.
I shouldn't have used the past tense, above, as it is still in the mix today.
