Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Nice list of Life 101: 50 Things Every 18-Year-Old Should Know. I must have slept through that class.


#48 is a good one: You beat 50% of the people by just showing up. You beat another 40% by working hard. The last 10% is a dogfight in the free enterprise system.

Pretty good lists I'll say. What I'd add is:

1. Know thyself. Those Greeks were on to something. You can invest a lot of time pursuing things you ultimately don't like.

2. There are big industries set up to prepare people to do something. Their agenda may not be in your best interest. Sometimes you just need to get started doing.

That's a good one, Kuster.

I'll just say that when I was 18 I wouldn't have had the time, in between hell raising, to have paid any attention to this at all. Not to mention the maturity to read and absorb the whole thing.

Though, in an different way, I did know I had much to learn. So joined the Marines, at 17. Turned out wise. Though even that took me years to appreciate.

There are no set paths, nor advice, nor admonishments, that will intrude on an 18 year olds mind. It is a beast of its own.

A saying I coined many years ago:

You've got to be good at what you do, willing to work your asterisk off, and lucky - because there are a lot of peeps out there who are good and willing.
