Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Solar is mostly a joke unless you live in some place like Nevada. For fuel and power, we love nuclear, coal, oil, and gas. And wood! Comments

QUOTE: we love nuclear, coal, oil, and gas. And wood! You, sir, are the 99%. Well, actually, the 98.7%. The 1.3% is the amount of worldwide energy produced from "renewable" sources. And that includes your wood. However, if you play your cards right, support the right people (ahem, Obama), you can make a guaranteed 29% on your investment in wind or solar. Yes, this amazing return is made possible by having government officials take money from the poor and downtrodden and give it to you and your consortium as "subsidies". Last year in an article about Spain's retreat from solar power (highlight, each enviro job cost 2 or 3 other jobs) a incident came to light about Spain's subsidies to companies generating power using solar.
It was disclosed that one “Solar” power company was making so much profit from subsidies that they secretly ran a diesel generator during cloudy days so they could continue to collect the mandated higher rates they received for “solar” power. They didn’t get caught until someone forgot to turn the generator off at night. Back in the 1980s my husband and I went to Hawaii several times on vacation. A huge wind turbine farm had just been installed, all shiny and new, on Maui. As most of you are aware, islands like Maui and the rest of the Hawaiian chain have pretty near constant trade winds, night and day. If wind power should work, it should work wonderfully there.
Some friends of ours went to Maui last year for vacation, and found that many of those wonderful turbines were non functional -- rusted out and not in use, their bases surrounded with shredded bird carcasses. The wind farm as such was pretty much non-functional. If wind farms don't work on islands like the Hawaiian islands, they probably are not going to work off the coast of Massachusetts or any other seacoast area. If you set them up in a desert area, then you have the so-far insoluble problem of storing and conveying the energy they make. And building back up facilities for when the wind doesn't blow. So, no thank you, thankyouverymuch. We installed a whole house generator last year, powered by natural gas and fully automatic. And every time Reliant Energy proves unreliable once more, we are so grateful we did. Marianne --re Maddow, anyone familiar with Ice-9 understands Bokononism, and its concept of the 'false' Karass, an example of which is the loosely-defined 'Granfalloon' usually regarded as a group of people who outwardly choose or claim to have a shared identity or purpose, but whose mutual association is actually meaninglessly built upon a fabricated premise.
MSNBC is of course the very definition of a Granfalloon. Without reiterating the exhausted and loathsomely familiar tenets thought by adherents to be the glue that joins 'em, what actually joins 'em is an unfortunate sputter, or wobble, in the circuit connecting the Amygdala to the dorso-lateral prefrontal circuit --the brain’s top executive, which organizes responses to complex problems, plans steps to an objective, searches memory for relevant experience, adapts strategies to accommodate new data, guides behavior with verbal skills, houses working memory, manages in its orbitofrontal circuit emotional impulses in socially appropriate ways for productive behaviors including empathy, altruism, interpretation of facial expressions, and typically responding to injury via releases of foul language and fatuous behavior patterns. Anyhoo, as the sputtering wobble (think of that toy battery-powered gyroscope you once wired directly to the 220V circuit in your parents firetrap of a house back when you were 10) develops a reverse feedback loop ("LFR" or Esrever Kcabdeef Pool) energized by the photon attention of Aliens (creatures who resemble the self but are from "the outside of me"), the normal power flow from the dorso-lateral prefrontal circuit to the amygdala reverses and that older, evolutionarily-subservient chaotic subsystem (deep in limbic emotional brain, constantly firing aversive cues to the anger and fear needed for ancient basic survival, associated with a range of mental conditions, often oversized in sociopathic brains) swells up like the Pillsbury Dough Boy in Ghostbusters, and begins strolling around the World Trade Center shorting the intricate signaling channels which by the very intricacy define the dorso-lateral prefrontal circuit. Or you could just say, ''ah, nutz to that buncha idiots'' and get to the same place in less time. oops, forgot to credit
