Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

"Modesto ain't New York, motherfucker."
And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine blasphemy. Doc 9:24 "Bottom line; Cain’s skill set does not match the job he is seeking."
Begrudgingly, I must come to the same conclusion, but Cain's qualifications must be far and above those of the incompetent clown currently in that position. i'd say the list of items in the POTUS skill set is pretty short.
Only one item: ''winning''. In this view, Cain's and POTUS's skill sets go together like love & marriage, horse & carriage. As The Cain Scrutiny moves toward Act III and the court martial, i expect his detractors will be the witnesses playing with the ball-bearings, perspiring heavily, and generally bogarting the joint. What is a sunstone?
I am totally convinced that the scientific community is bankrupt both intellectually and educationally. The whole concept of the sunstone and it's use in navigation has been known and even documented from the early days of sail. I know of several experiments that developed the concept of how the sunstone worked, what types of crystalline structures worked best, etc., long before the Royal Society of Scientific Snobbery "approved" the concept. Heck, I've mentioned it here on Maggie's about a gazillion times when we've discussed navigation and what not. Italian Cold Fusion Machine Passes Another Test On the other hand, we're finally getting around to possibly, maybe, sorta admitting that the cold fusion researchers may, just may, have a handle on the mechanism - not necessarily the physics of how it works, but the mechanism that makes it work. Skeptics, or "real" scientists/physicists, are stuck in the Newtonian - Einsteinian model of how the universe works. Einstein in particular didn't believe in quantum theory stating that "God does not play dice with the universe". The skeptics are not going to believe it because it doesn't fit the model of General Relativity. Einstein also said that the definition of insanity was doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results. And that would pretty much describe cold fusion experiments. There is a fly in the ointment though - sometimes it does work and with spectacular results like the one mentioned in the article. So the question would be does cold fusion really work sometimes and not at other times? Further, what if "reproducing" the experiment is difficult or impossible due to some unknown, exogenous factor? The mechanism seems to be the same across the whole of cold fusion experiments so the only variable has to be something that we can't account for - yet. Dark matter maybe? Physicists don't really know what dark matter is, yet they know it exists. Is it widely spaced or work in clumps? Is it possible that it figures into this somehow? Or perhaps some kind of sub-atomic quantum condition that is localized and completely random? Or evil conspiracy on the part of BIG ENERGY to suppress cold fusion as a cheap, almost free energy source? Maybe if the Newtonian - Einsteinian physicists get off their high horses and help these other experimenters out, we can get a definitive answer. Go ahead laugh - when I'm rich and famous because I've cracked the problem and provided a solution, you'll be sorry you made fun of me. :>)
Physicists don't really know what dark matter is, yet they know it exists.
Do they actually know it exists, or just hypothesize that it does to make sense of observed phenomena that don't fit the models? I think I just used up all the science I know to ask that question. Actually, we do have some federal employees who actually produce something that is willingly and voluntarily purchased. I'm thinking the people who run the great Western hydroelectric dams and work at TVA do make wholesale electricity and tame flood-prone rivers.
The line between doing what private enterprise can't or won't do and using a government subsidy to undercut private capital remains a vague one. As to cold fusion, I'm keeping an open mind, one that is positively disposed. Why? The experiments that have worked seemed to genuinely have made LOTS of excess energy. The establishment physics and chemistry people poopooed cold fusion with THEIR argument that since the established science couldn't explain it, any result to the contrary was false. As an engineer with an eye for the history of technology development, the USUAL course is empirical knowledge making useful products BEFORE the science explains it. A classic example is Watt's steam engine. Only afterwards did Carnot explain the thermodynamics. History abounds in other examples.. This is a very informative article on the "OWS" gang. "The next great realignment in American politics is very likely to be a Democratic realignment. It cannot be a Republican realignment, because the GOP has moved so far to the extreme right that it is now far outside the mainstream of American opinion." Are you kidding me? The linked article worshiped at Hiliary Clintons feet, and genuflected towards Obama. The incontestable source of this revelation? Time magazine. I don't even use Time to line my birdcage anymore, the parrot got constipation. Whatever happened to the mime that the Republican and Democratic parties were just the same? You know, the reason a little group called The Tea Party sprang up. The Republican Party is as "far right" as the Chamber of Commerce. Did you throw that in there to see if anyone was paying attention? Back in the day, I lived in Camp Springs, MD, and worked for a company that moved government office furniture one summer. I never saw a federal employee working.
Thanks for the lovely picture of the forest in fall. Was it taken this year?
May I offer a view of a river in the NE in Oct. '06.
