Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

"When you own something's debt, you own them. Bank owns my house: I pretend that I own it."
Works with small debts, real collateral, and moral debtors. Otherwise, all debts bets are off. If you owe somebody a small amount, it's your problem; if you owe somebody a large amount, it's their problem. Wait until the EU and the USA default on their debt to China. Boy, are the Chinese going to look foolish. Reminds me of what Trump once said: When you owe a bank a million bucks, they own you. When you owe them a half billion bucks, you own them.
What happened to the first picture with the keg? Not that the current one isn't nice.
Well, it was "censored."
We aren't supposed to do T&A on work mornings.... re Occupy Wall Street kitchen staff protesting fixing their donated food for freeloaders
The irony is rich but I doubt the lesson will be learned. For dems it is always, 'do as I say, not as I do..' Put the beer stein down. Now. Back away slowly. You are about to pop.
RE - Merkel's thoughts - Well, it is a nice thought, but, even in this peaceful union, its a pot-holed path.
No matter how much they spotlight the EU unity, its still Italians, Spaniards, Greeks, Huns, Frogs, Limeys, etc to the other participants. Tough to overcome those many incidents of history and memories... Well, that and the Finance minister (Schauble?) making an off-hand comment about still being able to print Marks again - that does not abode well for EU stability....
Re: Limited War
I agree with this column. Limited war is much more costly and much less effective to the countries who wage it than unlimited and I think that could even extend to civilian populations. The conflict is shorter in duration and much more decisive. When limited wars end, the results tend to be more vague (i.e. Korean War) unless the countries that were limited lose (i.e. Vietnam). They are cheaper in terms of personnel and materiel and the surrounding populations can get back to their lives a lot sooner. Another advantage is that it means fewer jobs for lawyers! ;-) "I hope this sign was photoshopped"
Of course it was. Same fonts used throughout. How about Yankee Rednecks as a protected class?
A term more fitted to New England than "Yankee Redneck" would be Swamp Yankee. The article about "white aborigines" in Australia describes whites who emulate aborigines. This reminds me of Norman Mailer's article about The White Negro, about white hipsters in the 1950s who adopted black culture as their own.
Re: Cain's campaign
I like Cain, too, but I admit that there are some rough edges to his positions (e.g. his response to the Israeli prisoner swap - 1000 for one). Concerning this story, I would consider the source first. I would not be surprised to find that the NYT was describing the situation in the worst possible light. It also occurs to me that running a company is a lot different from running a campaign. I expect he's on a pretty steep learning curve on several levels - which is not to excuse his actual short comings. When you own something's debt, you own them. Bank owns my house: I pretend that I own it.
So let's say you pay off your mortgage. Think you own your house then? Stop paying your property taxes (which are currently 40% of my total monthly mortgage + escrow payment here in the SW Chicago suburbs) and see how long you stay in your house and who really owns it. That is what is so demonic about property taxes. You can do nothing and the state can take your property away. It's criminal.
Speaking of the OWS protests, the Richmond Tea Party is pursuing a suit against the Richmond City Council.
http://www.therepublic.com/view/story/850c772fd9004fc5ac0585aef836fefb/VA--Tea-Party-Occupy-Protests/ Seems that when the Richmond Tea Party folks wanted to have a rally on public property they had to pay $10,000 for permits, police overtime, park cleanup, etc. But the City is letting the OWS folks use public property for far longer and haven't charged them a thing. "Major in math" Funny, that was my first thought when I saw your Be a Philosophy Major link a few days back.
The White Aborigines link was a very good essay. Bird Dog -- The Cafe Hayek link is to an article by Russ Roberts, not Don Boudreaux.
