I know that they build large bridges in earthquake zones but putting a 64 mile tunnel near one of the worlds most seismically active areas looks like a bad idea.

If they had another 9+ earthquake like Anchorage 1964 I would hate to be in that tunnel.

Maybe off base here but just a thought.

The idea of a train tunnel under the Bering Straits goes back to 1906.

As a grad student I was tasked to research this proposal. I had to climb into a dusty, under-the-eaves archive of an Engineering School's library to dig out the plans.

Bought time someone stood up to the Smoking Nazi's. If you don't like to smoke go somewhere else, if you don't want to work where people smoke, go work somewhere else. How hard is that for most people to understand that you take responsibility for your own actions.

Can people not read signs and make their own choices? but of course far too many people want the government to dictate their preferences on businesses.

Regarding the military: we had formations of B-17s larger than our current entire fleet of bombers. Granted our current bombers are far more capable than B-17s, still, that says something.
We have more bombers older than 40 years than younger. We have fewer than 150 bombers in the B-1 and B-2 fleets combined.
A Navy ship is almost like a base in itself, especially the cruisers and carriers. I'd hope they would last for many decades but they would need modernization as they go.

You're absolutely right, Geoff, about a Navy ship being almost like a military base in itself. When Haiti had its earthquake, the US sent a nuclear powered carrier to aid them, with a crew of 5000, an up-to-date hospital and staff, planes to help evacuate folks from dangerous areas, a sea-water conversion system so that areas with little water could have supplements, additional food and folks to prepare it. in fact, just about anything needed to help Haiti get back on its feet.
The fascinating thing to me is that the island of Hispaniola, which is given over to Haiti on one half and the Dominican Republic on the other half, is an object lesson on the importance of good government. Haiti is still a pathetic mess [and has been many times in its past, due to its love affair with corrupt politicians like Papa Doc Duvalier] and the Dominican Republic is more or less back in business.

Women joining men as partners? Not all of them, not all of the time. Whenever my wife gets a bit pushy, I tell her, "Welcome to my world. Deal with it." That puts a stop to all the kvetching, toot sweet. She's like most women, I suspect, in preferring to use men as human shields....or cannon fodder.
