We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
"Red meat and gin" was her rallying cry when the food world's puritans dared to promise long life through nervous nutrition; she scorned grilled vegetables as "burnt and undercooked at the same time". When asked to describe her guilty pleasures [...] she was sure to respond with her usual cheerful defiance, "I have no guilt".
Julia Child detested the food police. And for that, they have detested her. Meryl Streep couldn't keep her graceless trap shut even after she got the privilege of portraying Child in "the movies."
I used to watch Julia faithfully when I was in my thirties. I still remember one of her shows where she was making a chicken recipe, and she was overcome with what we beginners were faced with when we were filming live and had to ad lib to fill out the allotted TV time. "And so," she said in that wonderful plummy voice of hers, "we'll let the breasts sit in the pan, making simple little cooking noises..."
