Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

The cartoons from the Depression Era are great. The one of the trojan horse is exceptional.
Y'all be sure and note the link after the last of the seven toons --there's another page, also excellent.
Hey, good call, Buddy. Remember all those mockeries during the '08 election that showed 'Home & Change' Obama riding a unicorn with a big rainbow in the background? Now picture that superimposed on the first pic of the second page. Perfect.
Okay, "hope" and change.
BTW, were you guys aware we have an awe-thentic 9/11 'Truther' here on Maggie's? Some nutcase named 'Tom Hyland' has now left two comments to my 9/11 post promoting a Truther film. Both lasted about as long as it takes me to hit the 'Delete' link in the notifying email I get, but you have to admire the lad for trying! merc, yup --that's a good un. Reminds of another great Democrat, JFK, credited with the pomo motto, ''perception is reality'' --perceived to be a real aphorism, which oaf coarse it snot.
--my fave is #11, the Carey Orr great from the Chicago Trib 1934. Here it is --did you know you can right click on the individual toonz --and get a web addy? And it's a big copy, too --especially useful for all the little text burbles in this one --which circulated the internet a couple years ago and was amusing even then, before the last two years turned it into ink & paper stink & prophecy: http://www.bearishnews.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/new-deal-cartoon1.jpg i note anew, never saw it in the first time 'round, that the Donkey is not repeat not pulling this particular wagon with any verve or enthusiasm. In fact he appears to be being beaten into the task, and has the bandaids to show the mistreatment has been happening for awhile. The rider with the quirt labeled ''tugwell head'' is a small (easily search-solved)mystery, as the actual model's surname is 'Tugwell', not 'Head' --the 'head' appellation being a reference to a then familiar descriptor of him as 'head' of something becoming known as the "brain trust". This is the guy (Gott en Himmel, an F.Scott Fitzgerald doppelganger!): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rexford_Tugwell ...and here, from 1934, is an early reference to a problem only lately limned, that of ''case law'' assuming superiority, in the Progressive Universe, over ''law'' itself, in its per se condition. PS,
correct typo'd (and sunk with all hands) link: http://www.thecrimson.com/article/1934/1/8/rexford-tugwell-brain-trust-head-declares/ === Not a 'quirt' but a Cat o' Nine Tails === Rexford Tugwell developed the policy of raising food prices (then known as fighting farm produce deflation) by subsiding a 30% decrease in a farmer's year-over-year deliveries to market. === This policy had an effect in the south of driving the poorest farmers off their land. (Note, query: is this where the 'ford' in 'Pigford' comes from?) Anyhoo, it begs the question, yet AGAIN, of why on earth the poor feel that the Progressives are their party. The error is persistent --one supposes for the reason that there IS an element of truth to it --in the same way that for a sheep it is true that the wolf party is always interested in him.

"Obama Blamed Climate of Poverty & Ignorance for 9-11 Attacks"
Is there anything that can't be blamed on climate change? One photograph taken before Obama's repeat before both houses of Congress, of his tired ideas is truly memorable. Obama is standing behind Trumka with his hands on Trumka's shoulders before he gives his daily latest speech and face-time fix. It is very much like an embrace -- which of course it is. So we have photographic evidence of Obama's hug-a-thug policy, which I find completely, uniquely distasteful. Trumka, the president of AFL/CIO, is a very frequent visitor to the White House using his time to imprint his thuggish ideas on Obama, as a mama duck does to her ducklings.
Anyway, check it out why don't you... Marianne |
