We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

So glad to hear that MI is finally doing the right thing in getting college students off of food stamps! The comments were enlightening....students using their iphones while buying with food stamps.

This would have made a lot more sense if he'd been blind. Then, indeed, you'd have legitimate complaint, and demand the interpretor direct your hands to the nude objects so that you, too, might understand the freedom going without clothes brings. Blind people, demand your rights!

Shtrasler is incredibly confused about economies. He is happy Israel moved from socialism to a market economy where everybody is protected from economic problems. What is wants is a market economy with a much socialism as possible without destroying the country.

How much should teachers make? They should make enough money that sufficiently qualified people are attracted to the job. Just like any other job.

Tell you what, Secretary Duncan. Get rid of teachers' unions and guaranteed payout pensions and replace that with the conditions that actual professionals work under (at-will work rules and 401(k)'s) and I'll consider your pay scale.

Regarding French's article, Is Marriage for White People?, this is the comment that strikes me the most:

"According to Banks, black women are less than half as likely to marry interracially as black men and only about 1 in 20 marry across racial lines."

The reason it is of interest to me is that, for no really good reason other than idle curiosity, for more than 3 decades I have been keeping track of the number of black male-white female pairings I see versus the number of white male-black female pairings. It was soon quite obvious to me that the proportion of mixed couples always greatly favored the former over the latter, in agreement with Banks. I give no credence to long-ago segregationist stereotypes, but I am truly puzzled by the enormous disparity in the makeup of mixed-race couples.
