We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Oh, well, it had to happen. The evil wind has its way, and has been having it for a long long time. Before there were airplanes, politicians' wives had to beware of train steps, and bus steps -- in short, any stairway that requires that the female person doesn't have both hands to control things. Experienced political wives learned that one sews weights to the bottom of one's skirts at intervals to keep said skirts down where they belong. Mrs. Obama hasn't learned this yet -- but then, the Obamas are slow learners.
If I knew the Duchess Kate personally, I'd advise her to talk to her grandmother-in-law, who is an old campaigner. She has her dressers sew little weights around the bottom of her skirts, so that such embarrassments can never happen. Or Kate could wear gently flared skirts for airplane travel.
Michelle Obama might learn a lesson too. But she won't.
